HELP LOCATING WHINE

I have a whine that appears when the car idles. I have stuck my head in the engine compartment trying to figure out where it is coming from, but to no avail. Is there a good trick to pinning down the location? I have read about using soap to determine if the belts are whining - How do I go about doing that? I couldn't find it in the FAQ.

From what I can tell, a transmission whine is more pronounced when under load. Mine disappears when I give it gas.

Any other ideas on what might be causing it?

Thanks,
Sam

    HELP LOCATING WHINE

Belts do not whine but rather make a squeejee noise if pulleys are not aligned, the soap is a diagnostic procedure, when sprayed on the pulley the noise will temporarily go away and you can then isolate the noise to a particular belt. A belt that is slipping due to being loose will squeal. Whining can come from the alternator sometimes when it is under load. A power steering pump low on fluid can whine. Try to isolate a strange noise using a length of plastic hose placed to your ear and pass the other end around under the hood to suspected locations.

    HELP LOCATING WHINE

Same problem / symptoms here. I have noticed coolant on my water pump. The wise bricksters on this board have informed me the water pump bearing may be on its way out. May attribute to part of the whine. Don't know if you have this problem or not. Also, I noticed my alternator is out of alignment with the rest of the pulleys. By moving the alternator slightly, the whine does go down. Spraying a little soapy water from an old 409 bottle almost quiets it completely. I believe my whine is a combo of the three.

BTW, if it is an alignment problem, IPD has poly bushing kits.

    Hope this helps.

I had the same thought initially, plus an otherwise loud water pump, so I went ahead and replaced it a week or so ago. That got rid of the other noise, but not the whine.

I'll attempt the soapy water to determine if it is a belt.

      Thanks for the input.

How dificult was the water pump replacement. On a 1 to 5 wrench skill scale, I'm about a 2.5.

          HELP LOCATING WHINE

Surprisingly easy. Hadn't done it before so it took me a while. The hardest part was getting the power steering pump to loosed so the belt would loosen. After that, it went quickly. Just make sure you get the pump nice and snug at the top.
