Dent in door! Ahgg! 700 1990

After a really strange couple days that actually turned out really good, I found a dent in my left rear door like 8 inches across! I have no idea how it got there, and there's no scratch or anything, although I'll look again in the light tomorrow, just the damn dent. I've only had this car for 3 months, and it's my first car, so yeah it freaked me out. Anyway, I figure before taking it to someone, I would open up the panel and try to pop it out myself. The dent's about 5 inches tall and starts right at the window sill. Is this a bad idea, am I going to screw something up? If I can do it myself, should I do anything besides push it out by hand?

Thanks very much,
Richard

You could try pushing it out by hand, but even if you succeed, the metal has been stretched and the dent will come back if you just push on the area. There are people who do paintless dent repair and they're truly amazing. I had a dent removed from my '85 Camaro after the door popped when I caught the passenger side mirror on the door jamb entering my garage. The results were amazing and the cost very reasonable. Just Google "paintless dent repair" for your area. If you mess up trying to do it yourself, it will cost more for a pro to fix it.

Sometimes pushing it out by hand just makes it worse. If it's just a simple dent, sometimes it can be popped out. If there is no paintwork involved, paintless dent removal is often a very good choice. And priced well also.

If it doesn't literally "pop" out when you give it a little push, don't force it. If it gets creased or gets any "outie" dents from prying or pounding on the interior, it can be harder to fix and can look noticeably worse.

Try a Paintless Dent Repair vendor in your area: it does work and they are cheaper.

You can try a suction cup type dent puller you can get at autozone for about $3
Sometimes the paint will crack from flexing it. Some commercial companies will pull this out for you. I beleve that they heat it up a bit to save tha paint.
    Do you have comprehensive insurance???????????????????????????

Thanks for responding. I think I will have to try the suction cup idea, after I posted I went out to try pushing it out by hand but it's high enough up that it's under the strip of metal between the exterior and the interior parts of the door, if that makes sense.

What I'm more worried about is the corner in the exterior panel at the bottom of the window sill, because it's dented in, and it would be pretty much impossible to hammer out if it didn't pop out with the rest of the dent. Would it likely pop out?

I really hope I have comprehensive but I doubt it, my parents are handling insurance for now (thank goodness :))

Depending on your insurance company you may be able to get this fixed with a small or no deductable. I myself have Allstate with O ded on comp. Corners are tough to pull out. The suction cup might not do it.
