Bulb replacement - 960 ECC control 900 1992

Anyone replaced the bulbs that illuminate the 3 knobs on the ECC unit? I started to look at this, but got discouraged when it looked like I would have to remove the ECC control unit from the console to be able to replace the bulbs. This looks like a rather unpleasant job. I hope there is an easier way.

Bulb replacement - 960 ECC control

Sorry for the slip of the mouse. My 960 is a 1995, not 1992 as shown in the header. All ECC units in 7XX, 8XX and 9XX are probably the same though.

Bulb replacement - 960 ECC control

Hello guys,

I wrote earlier about this lamp and found a good replacement. The repeat of this message is as follows (as stated these lamps were what I used to replace the A/C lights as well as the dash lights - In the case of the A/C just disassemble the old leads and rewire with these lamps):

Hello fellow board members,

I have found a replacement bulb. It comes in a 2 pack and is made by GC Electronics - Part # ML2182. T-1 3/4 Wire Terminal (14volt, 0.08Amps)-Indicator Lamp.

To repair: you must remove/crush the old bulb from the holder and then fit these replacement lights into the empty socket (luckily the wire leads are thin) and solder the leads into place. Voila, you have the original socket with a new bulb!!

GREG SHUTT, if you are out there, these lights will work on the A/C light panel as well. You just have to unwind the old bulb and then rewind the new leads of the replacement bulb onto the base (these bulbs are a little dimmer than the originals).

Good luck and hopefully this puts an end to getting screwed over. Just my 2 cents.

Tim.

Bulb replacement - 960 ECC control

Well if it's like the control unit on my 740, then yes, yes you do have to remove the control unit from the dash. It's not terribly difficult as you only have to pull it out maybe 3 inches or so to get at the bulbs. The radio will have to come out along with the trim piece that surrounds it. There are two bulbs that are on top of the unit, mine were covered by a strip of electrical tape. They just twist out. Now for replacement bulbs, I've no clue where to get those. I tried getting some from my ind mechanic and he couldn't see a part number on 'em so he didn't think he could order them. Maybe you could go to a dealer and they could charge you, say, $20/bulb. Or you could solder in a clear LED or maybe a colored one if you so desired. Anyways, let me know how it goes!

Thanks Greg. I'll have to go back at it again. The nature of the trim in the 960 makes the job worse it seems.

Just one confusing point though. In my case, the numerals of the temp control knob are not illuminated (sometimes comes back on if I thump the dash) . The indications around the other 2 knobs are properly lit. The wiring diagram (Volvo green book) shows the control module with what looks like 2 bulbs. From the appearance of the lighting (or lack therof) it looks like there is a bulb for each knob. Or is there simply enough spillover from the left bulb to illuminate the left and centre knobs, but it doesn't quite reach the right knob.

It looks like your control unit's slightly different than mine...mine had the bulbs on top. Yes, there are only two bulbs. If you look closely, the center knob will not be completely and evenly lit. It also sounds like you may not need a new bulb after all. Same thing happened in my car. The light would come back on if I smacked it a couple times, so I took the bulb out yelled at it and it worked! If you have any more questions, I'll gladly yank the ECC unit out of my '95 960 and take pictures/whatever. But like you said, the 960 trim makes that a fairly unpleasant job.

-Greg
