Slow to Start 90' 740 w/ B230, non-Turbo 700

I have an 83 B23F and three B230s. All start on the 2nd or 3rd compression stroke but the 90' always takes about 5 or 6. I had an 87' 740 that would consistently start on the 1st or 2nd compression stroke. What makes the difference, is it the valve that holds the pressure in the fuel lines to the injectors? Where is that valve, in the main fuel pump and is it hard to replace? I am concerned because here in Minnesota we need all the battery power possible at -20 or -30 F.
Thanks.

my 940 (definately not regina) can be cranky to start..I think that if i turn it to the engine running position, give it a few secs before cranking it starts much faster...

now in this setting I can hear the pumps running...wonder if it just builds up a head of presure....

I also have a 1990 745 that does the same thing. It has a Regina system. I'm told it's just that way. Mine was a little more extreme though. The first start of the day took about three or four seperate tries to start. I learned that if I turned the key on and off about five times without turning it all the way to start, it would start right up on the first try. Sort of like I was priming the engine. It's kind of sad I have to do this, but it works. The starting issue is the only thing I don't like about this car. Oh yeah, and the brakes. The Volvo dealer couldn't figure it out and my mechanic didn't have any info on the Regina system. Frustrating... At least my 1979 245 starts right up.
I was told the fuel check valve is near the fuel pump. If you have a Regina system there is only one fuel pump and it's in the tank. But I have never attempted to get in there to look at it. Good Luck.

Does your car have a Regina ignition system? Our '90 745 GL had one and seemed to crank a lot before it started. Like your other cars, our '88 745 GLE always starts immediatly.

I was told by a technician that the Regina system needs a full engine revolution before it knows where it is. Hence the long crank.

In fairness, the car never failed to start in the 50,000 miles we drove it.

Thanks for the messages. Mine has the fuel pump and fuel filter under the car and I think it is a Regina (weird looking coil with heat sink)on the left side of the engine compartment. I can't see any marking on the mass meter, but didn't take it off and look at the other side. If this is a Regina, it is the same as on my 91' 740 and it is almost as slow to start. The Bosch systems are faster now that I think of it.
