Lug nut stud replacement 140-160 1973

Had a flat the other night and found that one of the lug studs had sheared off at some point. Seems easy enough to tap the old one out and the new one in.But is there enough clearance between the wheel and the backing plate? Does the axle have to come off to accomplish this? Any tips?

Thanks a million,

Steve M.

Both front and rear wheel studs can be replaced in situ. There was a special too for doing it, essentially a big G cramp. May be worth asking a n old established dealer if they have the tool. Otherwise its strip down time.

Could one not pull the new stud through using the nut and some spacers?

Doesn't look from the pictures as though there's room to fit the new stud through from the back without pulling the axle shaft. Is there?

There is enough room. Incidentally there used to be oversize studs available, where the serrated bit that engages in the hub is oversize if the hole has been damaged. The special tool also presses the stud out. They're not that hard to remove. Try it without geting too violent. Nothing stopping you disassembling if it doesn't work.

It isn't a stud- it is a bolt with an oversize knurled shank and it has
a head on it. In the 1972 manual it is section 77, wheels, the first repair
shown in that section. Apparently you do have enough room to get the bolts
in and out but it takes a lot of force - they are a tight fit. I'd say that
if you try to hammer a bolt out with the axle or hub installed you might
damage a wheel bearing. The press tool is shown in the manual.

Yeah, gotta pull the axle. Not too hard to do though.
Lug bolts are standard 1/2"-20 UNF threads. Don't take any metric!!

My 145 manual is sketchy on this so I consulted by 240 manual.

As I read it, I've got to take off the caliper, disc, parking brake, undo the axle retaining plate, pull it, wallop the old stud out and pull the new one with a lug nut and some washers and then reassemble the whole thing.

Is that about it?

It's been a while since I was into it but it sounds right.
You might want to intermittently tighten and hammer from the
back when you go in with the new bolt.
