Rear Axle swap do or don,t? 120-130

My 65 Wolwo also screams on the highway as High Revver explained earlier
this month. An overdrive is an option (providing i could find one) but
what i really want is a later model axle with higher gears and slip off
drums. Any suggestions on fitment?

Hi Wolwo ....

You might already know this ... but that rear end is a DANA 30 ..... Dana is still VERY popular with the 4x4 crowd and all sorts of differentials should be available that will fit your carrier .... check things out with your local JEEP club ... bet they can steer you into a source .....

Season's Greetings all

122s have dana 27s as do drum braked 1800s. The 140 and 240
(and disk braked 1800s) use the dana 30.

I've had me weenie whacked a few times on this subject. The 122 switched to a Dana 30 in ~1967. This is most easily determined by the 2 1/2" axle tubes (vs. 2 1/4" on the Dana 27) and later type trailing arms. There are other issues with the drum vs. disk brake Dana 30s, however. I think it's related to splines on the axle shafts, but am not 100% certain.

AFAIK the Dana 27 was also used in Jeeps and I/H Scouts for certain years as well.

There are probably LSD units available for them, but on casual searching all I've found are air lockers for extreme off road use.

Space permitting, Why not just put on taller tires. That's what I've done on my 745 and 245. The look kind of funny but the rev's are lower, and theoretically I'll have more top end on the Highway, not that I'll ever need to go that fast. It takes a while to get up to speed, comparatively but if your using the freeway alot like I do it's worth it. FWIW I'm running 215-70-15's on my 745 and 215-70-14's on my 81' 245 3sp Auto.

Later model rear ends have rear disks, not those archaic drums.
In fact, the first 140s had rear disks as early as 1967.
That means that a LOT of so-called "modren" cars are 25 or even
35 years behind the times!
All seriousness aside, though, you could probably fit an 1800
rear end if you really wanted to. Actually 4.1 isn't too bad,
especially if you are accustomed to a 4.56 like the wagons and
others have. Now there's a real revver! (but not particularly reverent,
in many ways fairly irreverent.)

Seriously, the revs are not that bad on the engine or the car,
they are pretty sturdy. What they really bother are the occupants.

At this time, more importantly, may the joy associated with the
Savior's birth be yours in every way.

Slip off drums? All the Amazon rear drums are on a Morse taper.

All non overdrive cars have a 4.10 diff

My wagon (and I suspect, lots of others) has a 4.56.
My 69 164 has (I'm pretty sure) a 3.31, maybe a 3.73.
I put in an M410 and in overdrive it is too tall a gear
for anything but cruising at more than about 75 mph.
(That is one reason why I haven't fixed the OD which
became intermittent and quit a couple years ago!)

We've got about a foot of snow - would have been more but
it wasn't very cold as it was snowing starting yesterday
morning so it was melting from underneath as it accumulated
on top. Those who wanted a white Christmas here are going to
indeed have one. We can say with confidence that the One who
sent the snow has also provided us with everything we need
(as opposed to all we want) and will continue to do so.
May He bless you as you observe His birth in human flesh.

That's true, I was thinking saloon, the wagon has the lower rear end. The disk brake 1800 E/ES rear axle is only a straight swap for the post pressed rear arm suspension. A '66 should have the early type with the pressed arms.

It's unseasonably warm here today, 13 degrees Centigrade. I can't see a white Christmas happening here. I'm going to my sister's, should be nice she's got little kids, 3 and 7. All my best wishes to you and yours for Christmas and the new year.

Regards

Pete
