I have a 92 940GLE (B234 engine in Canada) It too is missing the light but it has the screw hole/mounting area for a light. I thought that the light was taken by PO but the mounting hole looks virgin so mine didn't ever have a light either. I do not think that the lights were eliminated B/C of heat (we have a B230FT and B234 w/o lights).?.?

I think that there may have been a period in the early 90's where the light assemblies using mercury were banned from cars produced in europe. It is possible that Volvo may not have had the newly redesigned light assemblies ready and ran out of the old lights for cars on the production line in Halifax. Therefore, our cars were left without lights while those cars produced shortly after may have got different hood lights. Just a thought - but I could be just spewing crap. Anyone else know for sure. Do the boys & girls close to the old Halifax plant know??

Tim

the 740's i have seen with the lights didnt have murcury, rather a sort of turn switch on the end of the light itself...

hmm the plot thickens.. i have thought about fitting one (seems like a good idea) but wondered why it wasnt there...like you i thought po had trashed it.,..

I'd bet your car is prewired for the lamp. Look around the hood hinges for a wire that sneaks up into the hood -- that should be it. If the lamp is missing, the unused wire might be tucked outta sight somewhere.

To select the size of required fuse, remember that Watts equals volts times amps. The system is 12 volts. Thus, a 25-Watt bulb would draw just a hair more than 2 amps, although the cold inrush might around 4 amps.

I'd guess that the underhood lamp is around 10-15 Watts, or 1 to 1.5 amps.

A 5-amp fuse would protect your wiring just fine. I'd be content with the safety provided by a 10-amp fuse, and a 10-amp fuse would be more immune to early failure.

Tap off the same fuse that powers the interior courtesy lights.

Good Luck,

Bob

hm...so use my rapair manual to find out what wire does it and tap in from that??? can't i just run it from fused power from the batt?? doesn't the light turn on when i open the hood? ...isn't that what the mecurey in the lamp lamp holder does?

I was planning to do the same thing and thought that taking fused power from the battery would be the best for the 940 that I have. The 740 hood lamp does turn on & off by itself as you suspected (based on hood position) - I have proved it using my own 740 as a test vehicle.

ok then ... good to know .. i'll just tap into my fused power for my fog lights and elect fan ... hm .. how many amps should go on that fuse?? 20 to much?

The hood lamp is 10 watts I believe, hence 20 amps is way too much (although fused at some current level is miles better than no fuse at all). At most, 2 amps is all that is necessary assuming my math is correct after a late night out.

Good Luck,
Tim
