Stupid Tach Always At Redline 700 1991

The other day I was jumping my 'project' car, a 1991 744 NA, because the battery was dead (obviously). When I got into the car, I noticed the tach was pegged at 7k and didn't move at all while the engine was running. No other electronics appeared to be harmed. Radio was fine, headlights, turn signals, etc etc. I looked through the wiring diagram and there didn't appear to be any way I could have fried it without the key in. This car has a history of crappy grounds/connections in the instrument panel. Would a bad ground cause this? I'm hoping it's something simple...

Does it stay pegged with the engine off and key out?

Sure sounds as if the tach is down for the count.

Time to hit the boneyards for a good used replacement. The tach can be replaced in your existing instrument cluster, so your speedo (and odo) and existing gauges will remain with your car and your odo will show the car's true mileage.

If you yank the cluster, take a few extra minutes to tighten connections (resolder, maybe?) and be sure to tighten the mounting nuts for the temp and fuel gauges. Those mounting studs also provide the electrical connections, and they loosen with time. The gauges then become intermittent.
