960 A/C blows warm at highway speeds 900 1996

My 1996 960 Air Conditoner runs fine when in the city. Once we hit about 40-45MPH the compressor cuts off. Air still blows from the dash vents OK just no cooling.

Can this be vacuum related, since the AC compressor is an electrical clutch, or is it controlled by a vacuum servo somewhere?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

We had the same problem on our 960 with teh AC compressor cutting out on the highway. Stop & go traffic it would work fine. Turned out to be low refrigerant; recharge took care of it, and have not had any problems since.

    96 960 102,000 miles.

Are you sure the compressor is shutting off? It is possible that there is a vacuum leak in the ECC control system (vacuum line to the coolant valve?) such that at higher throttle settings (resulting in lower manifold vacuum) the coolant valve goes to the warm position (no vacuum default).

The coolant valve on the engine side of the firewall is controlled by the grey hose form the solenoid bank above the passenger's left foot (LHD cars at least). I have a diagram that migst help. Get in touch.

Maybe there's a simple test. At highway speed, when the air is blowing warm, slip into neutral and let the engine speed drop. This will raise manifold vacuum - and if the ECC vacuum is the problem, the air temp should change.

If the refrigerant is low, there may be icing in the evaporator which could cause the problem. Try setting the system to just barely cool.

      Good Luck,

      Bob
