Reverse Slipping? 200 1986

Lately, when I put the 244 in reverse, it feels like it is slipping (not hooking-up as well as it does in drive). Is there any band adjustment or should I start saving for a trany?
Thanks Always,
Rick.

I am sure that you have checked the fluid level and that it is OK. There are no bands in the AW70 trans, and no external adjustments. As the previous poster said, hard and aged seals bypass the fluid for a moment until they conform to the bores and take the pressure. Colder weather makes it worse. A rebuild is the best way to fix it, but the transmission seal conditioners can fix it for while in some cases. But that is like giving nitro to a heart patient - sooner or later it gives up.

Cannot say for sure about Volvo automatic transmission as mine is working fine.

However, the symptom described, in Ford automatic transmissions, is a common indicator of hard/leaky internal seals that do not seal well until the internal oil pressures get high enough.

Symptoms are often worse when it is cold.

Dear Bayer - Bare? Bexar? (Isn't our language wonderful?)

Lemme know what you find. On seemingly random occasionly my 1986 244GL, upon shifting to reverse, just sits there and does nothing. After 30 seconds at idle in kicks in. If I rev up to 2000 or so, it kicks in quicker but with a bang.

240K estimated miles (Last know OD is 184K in Apr 1998) on original tranny.

Good Luck,

Bob
