89 240 wagon with v6 200 1989

I have heard negative rumblings about the v6. Somehow I got the impression they were not in production very long. I am considering a 1989 SW for $1990.00 in the atlanta area. I have not looked at it yet. How bad are the V6 engines and what goes wrong with them?
I am waiting for parts for 83 245 and wondering if i should continue fixing 83 that is paid for or get a newer model.

Thanks

joe

The add says V6 200 1989

I have not talked to them yet, could be misprint.

Thanks
Joe

Could be a misprint, could be a PRV swap, could be some non Volvo engine, etc. Heck, I see people advertising Volvos with V4s all the time (the only automotive V4 that comes to mind is that Saab).

With the PRV (B27, B28, B280), there are a few things to keep in mind. Apparently the older ones (B27, to a lesser extent the B28) were prone to self destruction... and the newer ones (B280) not so much. However, they're still vastly more complicated and esoteric in design than the red block four cylinder (or, dare I say the diesel). They hold a larger amount of oil (around 7qts or so), so oil changes (and you should be running synthetic anyhow) can be pricey. The V6 is not nearly as common as the four cylinder so finding some parts may be a bit difficult. In general the engine just looks more intimidating. I wouldn't be afraid so much of the cost (and yes, some parts are amazingly more expensive, especially on the B280s) as I would the learning curve. But if you're up for a challenge, I say go for it.

I would guess an 89 240 with a V6 got it through transplant. Could be a Buiok?

Would someone put a B280 in?

"Would someone put a B280 in? "

And WHY?

(apologies to anyone with a 500hp V6 240 rally car!)

If you found an '89 240 with a V-6 in it you have a rare bird indeed, the last PRV 240 rolled into the US in '82 I think. The 740s used them up to the late '80s or early 90s but the engine never overcame its bad reputation that the earlier versions earned, I had one (79) it was well deserved. The newer ones are supposed to be OK so if you find you like the car and it has good maintenance records you will probably be fine.

The 1987-1990 model years have the reputation of being a fine engine. The earlier V6 engines have a bad reputation which degrades the value of the cars with the good V6.
