PLEASE HELP -- Parts availability for 140 series cars?? 140-160

Howdy n' all,

You may remember my previous post -- "What's it Worth?" -- a little while back. I am still grappling with a decision on what to do about my wagon. I do like it and would like to keep it, but I am concerned about the availability of parts. I have tried to find a voltage stabilizer and steering coupling bushings with no luck so far. Volvo dealer says he can't even get them from Volvo anymore.

So my question is this: how hard is it to get commonly replaced parts such as suspension parts, u-joints, seals, brake pads and parts, clutch parts and all the other assorted general-maintenance parts? I know the 240's were made in greater numbers; are a lot of the suspension, brake, and drivetrain parts used in the 240's as well as the 140's?

This is the decision maker or breaker. I have two vehicles and one has to go. My other vehicle is an '84 Ford pickup that I KNOW parts are readily available for, but it drinks gas and drives like a '40 model Willys. I am reluctant to sell it for fear the wagon might leave me afoot and I have to hunt for parts, or wait two weeks for a freakin' set of brake pads or some such thing.....

Any of you Volvo Veterans got $.02 on this?

Thanks for your input!

Craig

Don't forget your local NAPA or whatever auto parts store. 90% of the parts you will need can be purchased there, voltage regulators, brake pads, clutch components, master cyl, slaves etc... I only go to volvo dealer after I check my local guy. Speaking of which the V dealers parts guys are very inconsistent. I have one who can get me alot of stuff that apperently V doesn't sell anymore, but what actually happened is that they relisted parts under new # and they can be cross referenced and procured. Othere v parts guys and others will swear that they don't carry parts for anything more that's more 15 yrs old... go figure.

Read the ads (including classifieds) in Rolling mag.

Also see classifieds on this site, IPDUSA.com, etc

Pretty much everything mechanical that would commonly be replaced is available from RPR or iPd. There are also various Volvo specialty junkyards that sell reconditioned used parts.

The part's aren't usually in the corner parts store, but I really don't have too much of a problem getting parts even for my much rarer 1800E and PV544 Volvo's. It's just that the smaller demand has coalesced to a few more global suppliers and websites. Generally everything is available and arrives in the mail within a week or so. Really oddball parts sometimes need to come from Europe somewhere and take a week and a half.

I wouldn't worry about parts availability on a 140 series much at all. Now if you had something like a Sunbeam or a Humber Super Snipe (best name for a car ever??) I could see a cause for concern.

I agree with John. I have hadgood luck getting parts at a small foreign parts store in rural eastern Wa. for my 72 145. Usually I can get them overnight. The cars are pretty stout anyway & there are tons of them in junkyards,so it should be fairly easy to obtain them.
By the way, I have worked on a Humber Super Snipe-they do exist. Only the Brits could love that thing!
