Real axle dilemma 700 1988

Hi

I would like to check (or change) my real axle/differential fluid. I have an '88 760GLE with the V6. Yes, it still runs. None of the manuals address a lot of stuff about the V6 GLE's because they assume none are left on the road. Rolling under the car I expected to see the standard fill plug on the housing. Instead I found the gas tank, lots of shielding and the new parking brake cable I put in last week. In the spot normally reserved for the plug I found what appears to be a sending unit. It is on the aft/passenger side of the housing. It is in an almost completly inaccessible location.

Is this a low fluid sending unit?
Is the filler plug behind it?
Is there anything funky about this orphaned differential?

Before I do something stupid please help.

Thanks

Jim A

Jim,

Yes, you found the speedo sending unit/rear ABS sensor (if equiped). There is a fill plug on the rear of the housing. (13mm bolt) To access the bolt, jack up the rear of the car and put it on stands. The rear axle will hang down enough for good access.

SOME of the early axles have drain plugs. (my '85 745 does, my '94 945 does not) To drain the oil for an axle without a plug, just remove one of the 12mm diff cover bolts. (the lowest one. =)) Heck, if you are down there, why NOT change the oil instead of just topping it up?

take care,
simon

I believe you have found the rear axle speed sensor for the speedometer. It makes pulses as the axle turns.

I thought these had a fill plug on the back of the housing. Perhaps I'm thinking of another car. Admittedly I don't work on many 760's.
