My 2c: for the most light and least labor for the money, convert the existing outer (Hi/Lo) lamps to E-code H4's. You'll get the superior beam characteristics and brighter lighting on both high and low beam that way. Add a decent set of sealed-beam-Halogens (eg: Sylvania) on the inner, hi-only, lamps to the above and you will have plenty of long range lighting. I've got this setup on both kids' 240's and it "outbeams" every modern car I've driven.

Using relays in the circuit will make sure that you're getting full power to the lights, and also sidestep a frequent problem - the 240 has a marginal headlight switch and its death will be quickened by trying to feed powerful headlamps from it. IPD will sell you a pricey but very nice and timesaving relays-and-wiring kit. The small downside of relays on the headlights is that you will lose the functionality of the bulb-failure indicator on the low beams, but when one of those goes, it's pretty obvious...you don't need the warning light to tell you.

Check out Daniel Stern's website for a lot of good lighting info and he also sells the E-code lamps. (Google search on "Daniel Stern".)

You can swap the lights for the european one-piece glass lights as shown in this picture:

Installation is basic, they bolt in without significant modifications. My friend has them on his '76 242 (along with 1983 Turbo hood and grille.)

I have seen them kludged on, they don't look right unless you put the whole front clip on. They put out crap for light also, you are much better to go with H-1 high beams with a relay on the 4 lamp system. 100w high beams and you can see a rabbit in the road 1/4 mile away, use them wisely and with courtesy however. You can also source E-Code lights from europe, I just got a couple of sets for my '84s.

The only difference in the turbos is the sway bars, 23/21mm for sedans as opposed to 19/16 for NA sedans. A good upgrade for the budget minded that don't want to drop $300 for ipd, the ipd is quite a bit flatter however. They also have a bit different valving on the shocks/struts I've heard. The '790 GT has a 23mm bar on the back that works well with the 23mm front turbo bar and some (not all) GTs have stiffer springs, they don't lower the car but provide a much sportier ride. Some have only sport front springs some have both front and rear, I forget the years however.

Turbo Swaybars 200 1985

Don't worry about the year of the turbo that you're pulling parts from. They should all have had the same sway bars '81-'85 during it's production run.

I'm assuming that your car is a Sedan. In that case, both the front and rear swaybars from a Turbo Sedan will be a direct and ballanced upgrade for your sedan (23 mm front, 21 mm rear). -however don't take a rear bar from a turbo-wagon and put it on your sedan (19 mm). The rear bar on a Turbo-wagon is already the same thickness as a non-turbo-sedan (19 mm)

If you have a 240 DL Wagon your stock rear sway bar is about (15 mm), the Rear bar from a Turbo Sedan (21 mm) may be a bit too stiff for you. A ballanced upgrade for a non-turbo wagon would be a front bar off of any 240 turbo (23 mm front), and then a rear sway bar from a regular non-turbo-sedan (19 mm). The rear sway bars on Turbo-Wagons and non-Turbo-Sedans are the same (19 mm).

Good luck and God bless.
