Side trim removal on 240 wagon? 200 1986

hey guys, what do you think? the grey side trim on my brick is looking quite a bit weathered and i was wondering if it would be worth taking them off. Does anyone know how large of a hole the clips will leave in my doors? In the very near future I am thinking of doing some bodywork to my car, and while i'm at it I will probably tend to those holes, but until then, what do you guys think?

thanks for the help
Andrew Gyger

Just repainted all the black trim on my 92 240 with SEM Trim paint, made for vinyl/plastic trim, took 2 hours and looks factory new...has a flat look not shinyl/vinyl look.

Makes a world of difference

Stoney -- Is SEM a brand name or is it a variety of paint (i.e., acrylic, enamel, etc.)? Where did you get it?

SEM is a brand name, I use their "original trim black" paint as well. You can buy it from Eastwood, I think IPD actually sells it (?). You can usually find it at better auto paint/body stores as well.

I do not believe Volvo used adhesive to mount all the trim. I know the 85:245 has 3/16-1/4" holes. 5 per door? Grey? mine is black. IPD has some Black conditioner..

For the trim in the middle of the door, there is no adhesive, and it is attached as you describe. But on the 86+ cars, the molding piece that is along the bottom of the doors is held on by adhesive and clips/holes. I'm not exactly sure which trim pieces he was talking about.

The holes are probably 1/8-1/4 inches. That is about the size of the side moulding on the upper part of my car. I would consider painting it with a bumper and trim paint such as Duplicolor or Plasticote. Dressings will wear off but paint should make them look good for awhile - plus it is easy. I painted the lower rocker panels on my car with Duplicolor Black Bumper and trim paint - it dries to a matte black finish and has lasted over one year. It comes in shades of grey also...

Hey Andrew,

As far as I know the door and front fender mouldings are only held on with double-sided adhesive tape. The means may not justify the ends considering all the residue you will have to remove along with the mouldings, and also that the paint underneath has spent 17 years under cover. Big difference in shades. Unless they are falling off, I would try a trim restoration product, either spray-on trim paint or I think IPD sells this "Black Again" stuff that's like instant shoe polish. You may be able to find a similar product at a local auto supply store.

Happy Bricking!!!

I would love to remove mine as well, and I would deal with the residue and everything, but those lower moulding pieces do have clips that go into holes in the door. There are 2-3 holes per door, IIRC. I don't know if the moulding actually clips on to the front fender, though. That may just be adhesive, and one or 2 screws in the wheel well.
