Update to rotary AC compressor-question 200 1983

Hi,

The '92 PS pump I was going to buy was already gone . . . still looking for another . . . .

In the mean-time, is it possible to use the old-style (83) PS pump with the rotary AC compressor on our 244 Turbo project?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Steve A-

Update to rotary AC compressor-question 200 1983

Yes. I have seen it done. Looks great. Best to use parts from late 240 non turbo. There are Sanden to York adapter plates, but I bought one and tried it and it did not appear to fit perfectly, so I then salvaged all the brackets and parts from a late 240. I sold the car before I converted it, however, so I cannot give you first hand tips. Good local machine shop/auto parts shops can make custom AC hose surprisingly cheap - a great dealer alternative. You can also buy or salvage new style AC condensers that are the stacked plate design and are much more efficient. Vintage Air sells a 14 x 20 horizontal unit that I am using on my 745T, but late VW/Audi and even the Volvo S70 use something similar that could be adapter. You may need a short section of new custom AC hose to adapt off your hard pipes and some custom brackets. With a primary electric fan wired to come on with the compressor you will have great cooling even in town.

Update to rotary AC compressor-question 200 1983

Philip,

Thanks for the advice--it's much appreciated.

I think I have most of the AC parts I need from when I parted out a car a while back. Also, I had converted the "receiving" car to R-134 using the Volvo kit not long ago, and it got one of the new condensors at that time.

Now that you mention it, I think I even have an electric fan from a 92 hidden in the garage somewhere . . .

I'll have the engine out of the car, so I should be able to fit it all together a little more easily. That and I'm making one last search for the 91-93 PS unit this weekend--maybe I'll get lucky and find one.

Thanks again,

Steve A-
