Gas on bottom of turbo 700 1987

Hi All,

My car was running perfect and then just died as I approached a traffic signal.
Tried to restart but nothing. Had it towed home and kept trying to start it but nothing. Finally started today 24 hours later , and drove it 100 yards and it died again, it restarted after a couple of tries and was able to back up in the driveway and park it. revved it up a bit and died again and will not restart. Then I noticed a strong smell of gas and looked around and found a nice little puddle of gas on the ground under the turbo??? I put my hand around the bottom of the turbo and it was very wet with gas??? I don't get it. Please help with all of your knowledge. Pulled a plug and it was dry.

87 740Ti jet black, lowered, K&n air filter, 225/50/16 potenza's, mille miglia wheels, poly bushings, lot's of boost

The only thing I can think of is you may have dumped a lot of gas into the cylinders with extended cranking intervals trying to start it, and that got pushed right out the exhaust valves and into the hot side of the turbo. I would proceed with a standard "no start" troubleshooting program, focusing on the ignition system first. (you obviously have fuel) The hall switch and the power stage are the two most likely culprits, However, since you have fuel, that means a hall signal is getting to the EZK computer as it is sending the RPM count signal to the LH computer, which then closes the fuel pump relay. So,( after verifying a good cap, rotor & wires) I would swap in a different power stage, first. You can verify a functioning hall switch by observing a bouncing tach needle as you crank the starter.

Good Luck,hth

Thanks Bagle,

That makes sense, since everything else can be verified as working. Do you or anyone know if I can bypass the power stage to get it started?

I don't think so. It does the same thing a set of points does on a car with battery ignition.... It opens and closes a circuit to ground to the primary side of the coil, ensuring ignition spark at the correct time. No switched primary=no spark. You might check it's ground connection, its the black wire in the intake manifold. This is also the EZ117K computer ground. How's your coil?

Thanks again Bagle,

I was hoping I could jumper the connector and start the car. I have two coils and already swapped them and no difference. I'll try to find a power stage somewhere and replace it. I'll also look for that ground wire. Where about would it be on the intake manifold?

near the top of the intake manifold towards the rear, under a bolt.
