940 Wagon or Sedan, Which Would You Buy? 900

I am currently the original owner of an 89 240DL (181K) which I dearly love. My son will be driving soon and I plan to pass the 240 down to him and buy a 940 for myself. I am looking for a 1994 or 1994 940 non-turbo. I prefer a sedan slightly over the wagon, but could easily buy a wagon if the circumstances were right. Can anyone tell me what they like or don't like about their 940 wagon or sedan over the other? If I do get a wagon, can anyone tell me if there is anywhere to hide a subwoofer? Thanks in advance.

I have one of each and prefer my wagon (its my second wagon, the first made the ultimate sacrifice saving my skin) for the same reasons already mentioned about utility. Sure, there are plenty of spaces to hide a subwoofer.

I vote for a 940 wagon for versatility. A turbo also makes it fun.

I am a surprised wagon fan 900

All my life I thought wagons were fin ninnies, until I bought a Suburban. I loved the versitility and ability to carry MANY sheets of plywood or sheetrock fully inside.

Whe I was in the market and settled on a Volvo, I was open to the idea of a wagon, though obviously it won't do what the old Suburban does.

I bought a '96 965 last year (great shape/$7000) and LOVE the car. I am SO happy I got the wagon. Nice upright styling that says, "I couldn't care less about style," yet it has an style of its own that quite nice and has surprisingly gottem many comments. At the same time, I LOVE the extra utility of easy loading of most anything you might spontaneously buy without thought about whether or not it will fit, or trying to load over a trunk lip.

We were out recently and spontaneously bought a small chest freezer on special sale (we were tired of squeezing stuff in the combo) and I bought it knowing it would fit and I wouldn't have to go home, get another vehicle and go pick it up. Neat!

The store guy who helped take it to the car was amazed it fit w/o even having to lower the back seat.

The Volvo bricks are not that highly styled to begin with, so going to a wagon really seems to use the shape to its maximum benefit. I am totally sold on the idea! When I want to drive a more "fun" shape I go out in my Morgan, but to be honest, the 965 (and a 945) handle great, and I see not degredation over their sedan counterparts.

Ive owned nothing but Volvo wagons (3) and find them as good a utilitarian vehicle as you can buy, all things being equal. They are undoubtedly somewhat noisier than the sedan and harder to cool in the summer. Power may become an issue for you, as the 700/900 is somewhat heavier than the 240 series. I went directly from an 80 245 to a 92 960, so I may have a distorted perspective....

As for speakers, I'd bet that some of the higher end 940 have multiple speakers. My V90 has eight w/o a subwoofer. I'm uncertain about the requirements of a subwoofer, but I presume you could use some of the cargo area for one. An audio installer once talked to me about using supertweeters in the dash speakers, but I declined. My own personal opinion is that I have thought the car interior is neither a very good aucostic nor a comfortable listening space, but then I don't have an audiophiles ear!

940 Wagon or Sedan, Which Would You Buy? 900

I bought a white 940 sedan last summer with 93K for $5200. I does everything I need and averages 25 mpg on the highway. I got the sedan over the wagon because it was about $1300 cheaper (also white) than a comparable wagon at the same dealer, and it's a little quiter than the wagon. 99% of the time it's just me (80 mile, each way commute). However, the 940 sloping rear windshield is slightly harder to see out of than a 740, or the wagon, but no big deal after an adjustment period.

I chose the NA over the turbo for lower total overall repair costs, but occassionally I long for the turbo power when I need to pass someone or need to keep my position on the highway with surging traffic. However, my 93 940 sedan seems to be geared differently than my 93 240 wagon even though they have same engine and tranny, and are very close in weight. The 940 feels peppier off the line and while passing.

My wife has a NA V70. The power in that is great, even without the turbo. I was thinking of replacing my 940 in a few years with an S80. But since I have been following the FWD board for awile, their posts seems like horror stories at times and scare the crap out of me about what can go wrong and how much it cost to repair, and how much harder for a DIY'er to fix.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll enjoy either one.

Tom

I've got a '94 940GL (B230F/M47) sedan. It's white. I bought it when I changed jobs and went from a 16 mi commute to a 50 mi commute (one way). My previous daily driver ('74 164) is just too maintenance intensive to make 40K/yr fun, and I wanted more luxury and a quieter interior environment, too.

Simple reason for buying it: in our market a sedan's about 30%-50% cheaper than a wagon, and white is another 5-10% off the price. As it was mainly intended to tranport me plus a laptop bag a sedan's just fine, and I still have my '68 145 as a load hauler. If I wouldn't have had that 145 I'd definitely have paid the premium for the versatility of a wagon.

Personally, I am liking the wagon more and more. I am in my first - a 92 745T.

I did note that among all the SUV's that are out there (mo more than a wagon on steroids) - Chrysler comes out with the Pacifica - a high powered - tricked out - wagon. Somehow it makes me sit up a bit straighter in my black Turbo wagon.

I solved this problem by getting one of each...'93 964 & '93 965.

One hauls people and stuff the other stuff and stuff.

We love em!
