Tachometer Reads Low 200

I just substituted a used Tachometer from a 240 for the large clock, and the Tach works but reads low. Idle looks to be closer to 500 RPM and revs are extremely low with shift points for the automatic occuring around 1500-2000 RPM under full load. The 245 is new to me, but somehow I think it revs a bit higher than that. Any guesses? This tach was bought off e-bay from the "hardworkinghandyman" so its possible he gave me the wrong tach, but everything else seems right with it.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you ever get the LOW TACH READING thing worked out? I was wondering if you had that tach and if you found out if it was a 6CYL tach instead of a 4CYL tach. I have just upgrade my dash to a 81+ dash and I have a 4CYL tach for my 264GL. My tach read 1/2 too much. Anyways if you still have the tach and it was for a 6CYL let me know and we could trade. I'll cover the shipping. Thanks for your time.

Tom,
I don't have any of the tach's for the late 240s but if you can't get any satisfaction from HWH let me know and I'll send you one of the earlier ones at cost, there is a slight color vairation between the two, as the late styles are unheard of in the pick and pulls I'll bet you have one of the early ones now. I hate to see anyone get burned on ebay, makes it bad for the sellers who try to do right.

I think the tach has a sticker or stamp on it, indicating "4CYL" or something to that effect. Look for that. It could possibly be one from a late 260 series (6-cylinder) car or it's just defective.

IMHO that hardworkinghandyman guy is an idiot and sells every scrap of junk off his parts cars for what I think are very high prices. Most of it is stuff nobody needs... who wants a set of the center vents? Only $19.95! Great. It's kind of frustrating seeing someone sell used useless stuff for close to or OVER the retail price of new.

In the case of the tach, you can't really get them new, so that's a good thing to find. I just don't recommend that people deal with the guy because he is working really hard... to make a bunch of money. NOt to support the hobby.

Anyway hope it gets straightened out. I've read his posts and it does seem like he would make good on the item if it's inoperable. I've never had to adjust a tach when installing it. THen again I've never gotten one out of anything but another 4-cylinder late model 240.

I would hook up a tach direct to the coil to check the dash one out.. Any tech worth 2 cents will have one.. You probably have one...

If not and you want to take a cruise Ossipee way sing out... I still have my tach, dwell, volt meter.. It have 4, 6, and 8 clys ranges... In case you did get a 6 cly tach in error.

Then you can know. If it is a matter of calibration you can know that too. Mac

There is a small potentiometer that can be turned to adjust your tach. I have sold spare tachs in the past and have come across this slot type knob several times. I would suggest that you take out your tach and turn the small adjustment knob half a turn in either direction. The knob can be found on the circuit board that runs the tach and it can be turned by a very small screw driver. I'm not certain which way will make the tach read higher but you'll have to try one way and then the other way in order to find out. I believe I rigged up some wires to the tach when it was outside of the instrument cluster in order to save me the time of having to pull out the tach everytime I needed to make a adjustment but that will be something you'll have to figure out as well. You'll also need some sort of RPM reader so that you know what your tach should be reading that way you can make the nessecary adjustments. I used my timing gun because it has a built in RPM meter. I have noticed that recnetly there has been a slew of used Volvo 240-260 parts on Ebay but it's all stuff you can find at your local pick & pull for much cheaper. I would just remind you to take extreme care when bidding on some of the junk that someone is WORKING HARD to sell to you. I hope this info helps. Good Luck!!!

Are you sure this tach is for a 4 cylinder car, and not a 6 cylinder (260) model?

That would be my first guess. Second thing to check is the wire on the coil. It might be dirty.
