is it possible to use the cruise control unit of a 740(3501472)in a 940 '95

Only 1991 and 1992 model years of 740 cruise control will work on the 940 series.

do you know the Volvo numbers of these units; and why do this one work and not the older?

The first picture is of the cruise control ECU used on 1990 and earlier 700 series. I have seen quite a few different part numbers for the ECU, and they all interchange. The part number changes probably indicate upgrades to the ECU.
Look closely at the electrical connection.


The next picture shows a cruise control ECU removed from a 1991 740. While the mounting bracket is the same, the wiring connector for the ECU is substantially different. If you are really bold you could change electrical connectors, eliminate two wires, and you would make the earlier cruise control ECU work on the later car.


All other components interchange between the 740s and 940s, excepting the 1991 940SE.

The early cruise control brain has an eight pin electrical connector plus one connection for the speed input. The later units use a ten pin connector plus one if I remember correctly.

Just got hold of the wiring diagram and i think all will work. The thing i do not know for sure: on the back of my speedometer there's a connection marked D according to the wiring diagram it should be an E.
So in this case: D = E ???

Yes, you can make it work, and work well. However you must use the wiring diagrams and make the connections properly

Everything is in place. But no CC. Everyting checked. All seems to be ok. The FAQ says: ....The brake and clutch switches get power from the brake light switch. Terminal 3 at the control unit should have power from the brake and clutch switches...
But the wiring diagram says the connection has to be made after the brakelightswitch.
Which is the right method: the one from the FAQ or the wiring diagram? The cruise control unit is manufactored in 1990.

The wiring diagram is correct. The cruise control brake and clutch pedal switches are electrically connected to the switched side of the brake light switch. The cruise control supervises the brake light circuit with a small amount of electrical current, and will not work if the brake lights are not in the circuit.
