ignition timing (really elementary questions)

I am trying to time the ignition on my 1988 740 turbo. My first question involves interpreting the marks. The timing mark now fluctuates between the 0 and the first mark to the right of the zero. Is this 5 after top dead center? Is the 2 mark to the left of zero 2 degrees before top dead center or 20 degrees? The sticker on the car says it should be 12 degrees before top dead center. Thanks again.

    ignition timing (really elementary questions)

Look closely at the timing marks on the belt cover. The Bentley manual shows the 0 on the right (Driver side), marks at 10degrees (middle), and 20 to the left. Inbetween the number marks there are smaller ticks at 5 degree intervals. I think the 10 degree mark is the easiest to identify. The 10 sits atop of the mark.

When timing, the crank pulley should be positioned between the 10 degree mark and the tic to the left. It is hard to set it exactly, The angle you view from can make the difference of a few degrees.

    Hope this helps.

    Dan
