I took a picture of all the stuff i took out of the box and what it lloks like without it:

Pros and Cons: Gutting the OEM airbox?(pix) 900

Hi - I have a very similar car to yours ('91 745 turbo) and my indy mechanic recently took a lot of the foam out of the airbox because it was geting loose and getting in the way of the Air Mass Meter (I am referring to the foam that lined the top of the airbox, not the foam that is below the air filter).

BTW, I tried pulling up the pictures, and was not able to.

..you know what? The foam on top of the box was gone..so I was assuming you guys were talking abou the foam on the bottom of the box..Oh well..I took it out and it works fine..Had to unbolt the bottom part and sprayed it with water and cleaned it..had dead spiders and wasps and lots of dust and leaves..very dirty..
oh for the pictures..did you try cut and pasting it.. if not go to this URL:

Removing the foam is a good idea, since it deteriorates and ruins your air mass meter.

You can go ahead and pull that foam out... just be sure to get it all - don't leave any bits hanging around, and remove as much of the adhesive tape as you can.

Removing the foam is supposed to increase the flow capacity of the airbox, although I'm sure you'd have to do quite a few other mods to "need" that extra capacity. You will definitely hear your turbo a bit more, but it should still be pretty quiet.

New air filter may bump up your MPG a bit, especially if the old one was really dirty... I like the Mann air filter I got from FCPG.

BTW, I haven't been able to get your photos to show up...

One of the important aspects of the air filter is the fit. Make sure the gasket seals all the way around the box, if not air will take the path of least resistence bypassing the filter. The previous owner of my car used a wix filter that wasn't square, one end was convex so it didn't seal correctly. Replacing it with a Bosch filter did the trick!

Yeah... 900

.. I fit tested the K&N filter and it seals really well... I notice I had a couple of broken clips so I kinda did a McGyver deal where I took the metal springs of a clothes pin and used that as a clip to hold my cover down tight..
