I had found a cracked pulsair valve hose and got a replacement from Swedish Eng for $15-20. It didn't take very long for the replacement to crack. The pulsair valve is a one-way valve that allows fresh air from the air cleaner into the exhaust manifold. There are two valves located in the front right side of the engine. One of the valves was allowing exhaust gas flow back, cooking the rubber hose. The hose is connected to a vacuum operated shutoff valve connected to the air cleaner.
To test the pulsair valve, on a cold engine, place your hand over the valves, near enough to verify that air is being taken in and exhaust gas is not escaping. The action of the valve is a quick "pulse" corresponding to the opening and closing of the exhaust valves.
I cannot find the pulsair valve in any online source so I will have to wait until Monday for the new part sticker shock. The only salvage yard that has a few Volvos is a they pull, you pay (too much).
