should I buy this 960 ?????? 900 1992

My dealer service mgr. has a 1992 960 with all the power options for sale for $4500.00
They took this car from a lawyer in NJ who was passing through CT and blew his timing belt and froze up two of the valves. So he just gave them the title and said 'do what you want with it'. They called the dealer in NJ and this guy did everything to the car (except timing belt) and kept it dealer serviced. So they rebuilt the motor with one of the mechanics and now want to make a buck on it. Everything works from the AC to the heated seats and now the motor is new too. The car has about 120,000 miles and rides beautifully and looks perfect inside. But I'm thinking $4500 is a bit high on an older car. I really like it, but I'm wondering if I will have to shell out more money on it.
What's your opinions. I'm not locked into this car, so I can walk away!!!!
Marty

I have owned both the 92 and 97 of the 960. My son now owns the 92 965. I really like that car, and in some ways more than the 97 V90. It'smore, well, Volvo; a nice transition car from the old to the new. The 97 is much more posh and somewhat more comfortable. I just liked the power with more of the look of the older Volvos. Great car, especially when it's well cared for.

If the head work was done by a reputable shop and the car is in really nice shape, I'd jump on it. I'm not sure about CT, but here in L.A. that's a damn good price for a nice 960 with so few miles. This is a sweet, sweet car. Just make sure to change the timing belt on time to avoid valve job #2

If this '92 has made it this far, it sounds pretty solid. The price isn't bad, but see if you can get a warranty like Mr. Sanford suggested.

I noticed you have an 83 240. I have an 83 GL that has some new wheels and tires that I'm going to sell. They are really nice Borbet 5 spoke wheels with an excelent set of Avid Touring tires on them. If you know of anyone that i slooing for some sharp wheels (these are 15") let me know.

This car sounds like a great buy.
The $4500 you were quoted is the mean black book value between the 3500 trade-in value and the 5300 retail value.
I would try to get a warranty of some kind on the rebuilt engine if I could.

Good luck

run a search there have been alot of posts on the 960

as long as you change the timing belt you should be okay

however i think there was a block porosity problem with the older 960's

be carefull.

'92 960 owner approaching 200K miles...no porosity problems!!! My inclination is that much of these problems were due to poor maintenance. not reguarly changing the coolant on an all-aluminum engine is just asking for trouble. the reports are too scattered to suggest that XX model year 960s are the culprits...in fact there have been a few reports on this board of mid to late '90s 960s having porosity issues.

These are the best years to buy because of all the bad hype about bad blocks. I have four of these cars and they are all 92 model year. Two had bad blocks one with bad tranmission and the other with a broken timing belt. I have taken the engines apart on all of them and I couldn't believe how little all the bearings and pistons had worn. The tranny's are a little complicated with all the solonoids but I was able to figure that one out too. They all range from 113,000 to 138,000 and I have less than 5,000.00 dollars into them. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
