240 turbo alternator--options?

Well, thanks to the sage advice of the brick-boarders, my son and I have significantly improved the operation and maintainability of our 83 244Ti. The rotary A/C compressor and '92 PS pump have really smoothed things out--and now we can change belts w/o having to remove the crank pulley.

The next thing we'd like to take on is the alternator--I think the current one puts out 55 amps. Is there a higher output unit we could use without too much trouble? I'd like to avoid anything that requires new mounting plates, etc., because of the turbo. That said, I have a recently rebuilt 80-amp unit (from an 85?) sitting on the work-bench . . . .

Thanks in advance!

Steve Anderson

The oil pressure sender is the killer for a fatter alternator swap.

Even replacing a 55A on '83 with no intercooler the other day, I had to loosen the fan pulley to get the belts back on.

This was with the 925mm belts (vs the 918mm) Maybe longer belt, like 930 or 935 would make it doable.

I've got a bunch of belts around, but wasn't into experimenting at that point. Actually I didn't even think of it till now (truth in posting)

Well, you can fit a 700 alternator @ 70 or 100 amps, but it is a little bigger and things get pretty tight with the oil pressure sender in there. The problem is the sender limits the adjustment travel of the bigger alternator so you might find you have to remove the sender to replace the alternator in the future.
