tailshaft bushing/tranny mount/exhaust stress/atf drain plug 200 1989

240 DL sedan 1989 B230F 244K kilometers automatic

Just completed the tailshaft bushing and seal replacement. Job went well. MTC kit from groton, cheap and fit like a glove.
Took the opportunity to put in a new tranny mount too since it was original and looked somewhat sagged... cheap$ scan tech I think (groton).

A few concerns:

1.. The car has a more noticable "grungy" exhaust sound, coming from the front half somewhere... No obvious leak really or anything bad at all, just a deep tone. I am assuming that when I dropped the tranny a bit it "forced" the piping or a gasket somewhere. Any thoughts? Could it also be the new tranny mount positioning the tranny higher and requiring some sort of exhaust re-alignement? (the complete exhaust was replace two years ago, incl. downpie and cat, was quiet as a whistle).

2.. The new tranny mount has considerable less rubber than the original. I am assuming the quality is really not comparible, but put it in anyway. Any issues with these replacements?

3.. I used the tranny pan bolt (plug) to drain out the old fluid. It came off nicely, went on tight but I suspect a 'slight' stripping of thread when I tightened it (doh). I backed off very quickly. By no means is it loose now, it should hold and bond itself for life. Any experiences here? Any fixes?

Thanks!

Greg,

When I did mine about 1 1/2 ago (tailshaft bushing/seal, tranny mount), I had similar thoughts about exhaust noise and vibration. I think it probably is just a case of new parts not meshing with the old parts just yet. They need a break-in period. Especially drivetrain parts. Give it some time and everything will probably be fine.

not really, as I said in my post it went *well*.

One thing that took up some time was figuring out how to undo the bolts at the driveshaft flange connection... you DO NOT need to hold onto the nut. Just put the socket onto the bolt end and it will losten up nicely. Of course mark the position to put it back the same, and take note IF you have various size bolts for balancing... I did not.

My original seal had a metal outside sleave, needed to be punched from the back to come off the extension housing.

Use a large socket or something flat to drive in the new bushning... to remove the old one you can follow the directions in the FAQ, or I just put a flathead onto the hole i nthe inside and tapped it out with a hammer, worked fine, just do not scratch the surface of the housing.

Oh also I found it nice to jack up the car on only one rear side, support ot in various places. This way I was able to turn the wheel which turned the driveshaft (with car in neutral).

Good luck,
