Bolt tightening sequence for timing cover 700 1991

Is there a particular tighten sequence to follow in replacing the timing cover?

I have taken off the timing cover to change the crank and intermediate seals. Everything went back together okay, but the intermediate shaft will not turn now that it's all tightened down (even with the gear on turning by hand). I loosened all the bolts back up, then it turns freely, like it should. I tried different sequences, but nothing else but looseneing all bolts will free it. What else could be binding?

Thanks in advance;
randy

I think you mean the metal seal carrier and not the plastic timing belt cover. Is it possible that the seal has been inserted too far into the carrier and is then binding on the wider portion of the inter shaft as you tighten down?
Don't think there is any particuler sequence, just tighten them up a bit at a time.

It is quite possible to change those seals without removing the carrier. cedure.

Thanks David;
Yes, you are correct, it is the carrier -- sorry. I get confused because when I ordered the gasket from FCP, I thought they called it a timing cover, maybe not.
I don't think I have it in too far -- possible though. I thought I took care to observe -- the outer edge of the seal is maybe 1/64th lower that he outer edge of the carrier. I'll try again tomorrow and do it over. I thought everything went too easily :-)
Thanks for the quick reply!

Not sure - but could it be--- 700 1991

That the new gasket is thinner and creating a loss of clearance, the end play may be controlled by thickness of the gasket. No end play = no rotation.
Are there any shims that can be removed?

Don't think there could be shims anywhere, what about moving the seal out a bit?

Got it fixed!!! 700 1991

THANKS TO ALL!!
David, you and the rest of the guys were going in the correct direction. The Intermediate shaft WAS contacting the carrier back. What it turns out to have been was the new gasket was thinner than the one I took off (Usually it's the other way around, after years of being compressed)! Not sure of the exact thickness on the new one (opened and threw package out when it arrived early this week--and when I got the old one off I didn't compare them--like a dummy) however, today I went and purchased a roll of gasket material, carefully outlined as best I could the carrier. I used an old bolt to cut the new holes by holding the carrier in place over the new gasket, tapping/marking the spots, then moving the carrier and finishing the cutting routine on a firm surface. The new material says it is 1/32 thick, but sure does look thicker than that -- but it matches closer to what I took off -- wonder if previous owner did the same thing? Anyway, many, many thanks to all who took time to help me work through this odd problem. Now I only have 4 other Volvos to do in the next two months! ;-)
