940 Girling caliper guide pin grease 900 1991

I plan on dismantling and regreasing the guide pins on the Girling front calipers of my 940. I read in the FAQ that one should use a high temp silicon base grease. I have a tube of molybdenum disulphide based grease (Castrol) in the shed. Is that suitable for use on the guide pins? The tube says it is a high melting point, extreme pressure grease suitable for using on ball joints and tie rod ends so I assume it will not damage rubber. The grease is black. The grease that came with the calipers when I bought them was black but I guess that doesn't mean it's the same stuff.
Any thoughts always appreciated.

Regards
Brad

Thanks for all the responses. I'm glad I held off putting the Castrol grease on. Looks like a trip to the parts store next weekend to see what I can find.
Thanks again

Brad

silglyde at autozone is cheap.... well, not THAT cheap since it's about $0.99 per packet, and you need 2 or 3 packets... i'm trying to find a big bottle of the stuff.

is it me or does it turn from clear to purple when it oxidizes? maybe that's why i can't find a bottle of it?

edit: nope, here's a bottle of the stuff.

the packest at autozone are black though.

Where ever you get your pads/rotors online should be able to supply it. I get mine from FCPgroton and they have it, but ,like many things they have, it is not listed on their website. You have to ask for it.

AGS Sil-Glyde at NAPA — $4.95 for 4 oz. Tube 900 1991

The same stuff that IPD sells at $5.00 (plus shipping) for a 0.7 oz. tube. Nice mark-up, eh?

Do NOT use the Castrol, which will rot the rubber boots. Use grease specifically made for brakes, either that supplied with the calipers or one that you get from a parts store. Permatex makes a good product.

Definitely pick up a tube of sil-glide at the parts store. It will serve you much better than will normal grease. However, in a bind, you can definitely use brake grease like most of the automakers package in their own containers. It doesn't hold up quite as well, but in my experience it holds up well enough.

For best results, grease the guide pins twice a year. It sounds silly, but it is much worse trying to hunt down a caliper bracket on a Sunday afternoon, after your guide pin broke off inside the bracket.

Five minutes per side, much aggravation saved from never having to replace them.

I picked up the girling pin set which included a packet of grease. You're saying the supplied grease isn't that great? I have sil-glide but guessed the supplied stuff would be as good/better.

I think you are better off w/the silicon based stuff, brakes can get really hot and you don't want to chance the other stuff going liquid and coating the pads/rotor. You can pick up a small tube of it pretty cheaply at the local parts store. However, I am not a chemical engineer and may be talking through my hat. If someone knows otherwise, step in.

By the way, be prepared to clean the gunk off the pins and out of the hole, it can be rather sticky if it hasn't seen regular service.

I use Copperslip for these kinds of applications. It has a useable range up to 1000 %c or thereabouts if I remember correctly.
