PhilS, you mentioned traction issues? ;) (...excuse to post piccies) 444-544

Most of these are from last year, but looks the same right now.

Pirelli p6000's, a lightened flywheel, 3.31 rear gears, lots of torque, no weight, no LSD, no snow tires. Occasional terror.

Yeah, I drive it... ;)

A very long time ago, I owned a 1961 PV 544, for my four years of college. The 544 was a great snow car with the sawdust and walnut snow tires of the day. The heater worked great. My car would start at -15ºF. To start it at -25ºF I would take the battery inside at night, and re-install it in the morning.

If I could buy a nice 544 for a decent price, I would own another one. Most nice ones are priced much higher than I have paid for the turbo 700 series which we own.

I did, but... 444-544

Drove the 122 all over in the snow this morning with no probs. Stock B20E with 45 DCOEs, 4.10 gears, Dunlop Sport A2s -- a pretty mild setup. I am going to step down the chokes a notch, which will make it a tad less mild off the line.

It's the 1800 that needs dry pavement. And an LSD.

8^)

Winter? I have pulled so many cars back onto the street it's incredible. I guess snow and ice are frequently found in Sweden. The car were certainly designed for these kinds of surroundings. I don't have the scenery but I've driven 24,000 miles since November 5 2001 in my 544 and ONLY from Nov to March. I drive my 1800ES in the summner and go around 16,000 per year in him.

We occasionally get conditions like that, but, fortunately, without any
degree of regularity. Old Rapid Red (1960) handled them pretty well,
both snow and glare ice (1/2" deep, 28° F). Most of that experience
was gained in a 50-mile each way commute working in Tulsa in 1967-68.

The 122 seems about as good, the 164 almost but it has too much power.

How'd you get 3.31 gears in a 544?

I found the 140's much better balanced and slower to break away than the 544. They just have a more stable feeling. I did inflate a very low tire, and that helped. I have one studded (Nokia, fittingly) rear tire and one more that must be across town at my dad's. I'll get them on. Original red steel wheels with no hubcaps. Very ice racerish.

George the 3.31 aren't Volvo parts, they were installed from a Jeep. Works fine once I eventually got someone who knew what they were doing to set up the 'pattern' on the ring and pinion. I went through a ton of cash and about 4 shops who were sloppy with their work. For my 140, I got a 164 axle which is starting to get rebuilt with 3.73, and a Tru-Trac gear type LSD. We'll do it on a relaxed schedule, off the car, and swap it in.
