What's the best way to repair holes on the hood? 200 1976

Well, not so much a hole, but it looks like someone stabbed a chisel through the hood:

Here's a look from the other side of the hood:

Any ideas?

Hammer the metal flat with a piece of wood as backing on the other side - that should almost close the hole. Use epoxy putty on the back side, and maybe a little on the top side. Sand. Prime. Touch up. Life's too short to worry so much about such a tiny hole, as long as the car's running.

I'd wait to replace it until they caught the guy who got pissed at your radio show!

Buy a new hood. I know the u-pull-it in Damascus has /had about 2 or 3 early model 240's that will work for your 76. Even if you fix the holes your going to have a ugly spot of primer or something along those lines, so you would be looking for paint anyway...might as well go for the whole piece. just my thoughts.

The hole looks small. Try patching it with filler and then use touch up paint.

The alternative of a new hood would mean buying one, installing it and then painting the whole car because the hood color doesn't match.

Yeah, the hole is less then half an inch, or about 1.25 centimeters or so...

I do have some touch up paint, so I think I'll try this first. If not, I'll probably just get a junked hood as originally suggested.

isnt this going to happen for the car you need to replace the engine on? If you are going through all the work of replaceing the engine you might as well take the old hood off and put a better shaped junkyard hood on...mainly due to resale value and your time involved. this saves you time and hassel with a poorly done patch job (not that you would do a bad job, but they always seem to come back in one form or another). Also, I saw the paint on your 76 in the picures you posted...might as well get the whole car painted when the engine transplant is finished. You will have a slick ride with a relyable engine at this point. break this thing down into a long term numbers game. pay a little on the front end and save yourself time and money on the tail end.
Maybe I'll see you in Damascus.

The paint is actually in really good shape. The pictures I took were just at night while it was raining...

On top of the fact the car needs a good wash after all this snow we just got.

But, if I do get a good engine in this thing, I might consider a paint job.

If I was going to pay for a paint job, I'd want to get one on my '80 245 first though!

Can you guess which car has seen 422K miles?

I'll probably be taking a trip to that U-pull sometime this week, maybe even tomorrow.

Is that picture in front of your house? I think I may have driven by that. I live in West Moreland and also drive an 80 wagon. When I see another it always catches my eye. My is black with an air dam up front, side marker lights, and a turbo exahust. By the way what radio show are you from? just curious.

Actually, that's a picture of the side of my house.

I live in NE Portland, right off Fremont.

I also take second looks when I see a 240 of similar or older vintage to my '80. There are a ton of vintage Volvos in my neighborhood though. Lots of 122 Amazons, 140s, 164s, I think there is even a 444 or 544 down the street. Lots of 240s too. Maybe next time I'm driving about I'll take some pictures.

Do you know about V&B when it comes to parts? That's the place to get any part for any Volvo made before 1983. Any Volvo owner in Portland should have this guy on speed-dial.

And as for my radio show, I was the host of "Dylan's Funky Fridays" this past summer on KBPS 1450 AM. I'm currently trying to get a job at another station. I might soon be hired by either KRVO (105.9 FM) or KBMS (1480 AM). My ultimate goal in broadcasting is to eventually become a play-by-play voice of either a college or NBA basketball team. I did play-by-play on that Portland Public Schools cable TV Channel (channel 28 if I remember correctly) for the high school games they carried. I also did it on the radio for KBPS.

Well, Charlotte is getting a new NBA team, so who knows...

and I do see most of the volvo's your talking about on a daily basis. Very cool.

I'll keep an ear out for your radio.

Portland, OR 200 1976

I won't be suprised if I passed on through your neighborhood the last time I was up there (last year's iPd garage sale)! My friend has since moved up off NE Dekum, though.

Back to the hole ... I'd consider the epoxy putty method too. The good stuff will dry as hard as steel (if not harder). Just touch it up afterwards. Even if the color is a little off, it's not like it's so large of an area that it's easily noticable.

Nice wagons, man- I'm wicked jealous...:)

Where on the hood is the damage? Instead of a repaint, you could just apply matte-black stripes a la '60s-'70s muscle. :) A little cheesy maybe, but not compared to all the riceboys running around, right?

Good luck with it dude.

I would use a small fiberglass patch, sand and paint it. Fiberglass repair kits at auto parts stores are cheap (under $10.00). Body putty is another alternative, same process. A pretty easy fix either way.

I agree... a new hood would take less time in the long run because any fix besides welding a new metal patch in there would most likely come back and you'd have to fix it again.
