Trailer Hitch needed 200 1991

I just bought a 1991 240 and am now looking for a nice trailer hitch. Does anybody have an extra? Or a suggestion?

Thanks

Christopher

Trailer Hitch needed 200 1991

Hello Christopher:

Try your local pick and pull-- there are lots of Volvos out there that had hitches on them. It is true that you will likely need the hardware, which is quite specialized and prohibitively expensive from Volvo, but there are suppliers of metric hardware out there that sell the appropriate components on a single item basis.

I paid $50 CDN for a genuine Volvo hitch locally-- it needed wire brushing and a coat of rust paint. It is a very nice accessory to have!

Good luck!

I got a couple on eBay (they're always there). Typically (with rare exception), the hitch is in good condition, but the seller doesn't have all the proper bolts, especially the critical long one that extends from the inside of the trunk, down through the stringer to beneath the hitch, so expect to have to get those on your own in a good hardware store (be sure to use appropriate "grade" bolts).
Usual price is about $50 to $75 -- it varies seasonally with how much people need them -- it is, after all, an auction.
Now, take note, I'm talking about the really rugged "old" style Volvo hitch, the ones on the pre-'86 240's, with 2" receivers and massive tube frames. I hate the flimsy looking (1-1/2" square tube frame) later model hitches that look like rebadged Draw-Tite hitches with tiny "compact car" receivers, about 1-3/4" -- beware of these, as it is hard to find a good insert for this paricular winch.
In fact, I managed to mount one of these old-style hitches on my '93 240, even though it was supposed to take the flimsier, newer one -- I just had to cut some holes through the "valence" under the rear bumper.
Good luck.

Later model OEM 240 hitches are actually heavier duty than pre-86 versions and have a bracket on them to hold the harness plug adaptor. They are the best of the best and still 2" x 2" receiver.

They aren't 2x2", or any industry-standard size 200 1991

re: "...They are the best of the best and still 2" x 2" receiver...."

I agree that the electrical harness thing is nice, but they aren't 2x2". I made the mistake of first ordering through my Volvo dealer their hitch -- but it came with a weird size receiver -- neither the small size of the ubiquitous compact car size, nor the standard 2x2" size. In fact, the internal size of the receiver is exactly 1.64", which means that it probably requires a 40mm square insert!
Since I have three boats with two different ball sizes, and two different tow vehicles (the other with a standard 2" receiver), I prefer having a receiver size for which I can have just two inserts and that I can use on both tow vehicles. So I never installed the "new" Volvo hitch, and got an "old" style hitch with the 2" receiver instead for my '93.

They aren't 2x2 200 1991

I am sure there is an explanation for this disparity, but I have seen a few hundred 240 OEM hitches with receivers that are 2" X 2". I just measured mine on the '91, newer, with bracket, heavy steel, an it measures 2" x 2" i.d. actually a bit bigger of course. All of these hitches take the 2 x 2 ball mounts standard anywhere, barring rust.

They aren't 2x2 -- really! Here're the p/n's.... 200 1991

When I posted that prior message giving the dimensions as 1.6" square, it wasn't a guess -- I walked downstairs to my basement, where I have the brand-new, never used hitch right there on top of some tires. I measured it, and I-kid-you-not, the inside dimensions are 1.6" square!
On closer inspection, the hitch's permanent label reads, "made in Sweden by VBG...[can't read the rest of the swedish]", and it also shows Volvo part no. 9166557. There is also a paper label (from Volvo N.A.) taped to another part of the hitch showing p/n 9166519, but I don't know what this is for (I think it's for the mounting bolts' kit).
And, the hitch was ordered for my '93, but I'm sure it fits any '86-on 240.

Can't explain why your hitch is 2x2", but it isn't like mine.
Regards,
Ken

They aren't 2x2 200 1991

I wonder if this is the reason we seem to have different measurements on the same hitch. The i.d. of the hitch measures 2 1/16" x 2 1/16" and does in fact accept the 2" x 2" nominal ball mount unless occluded by rust. But you might be right that the official Volvo ball mount would measure prcisely as you say, and I do realize they are a looser fit. I did not measure the OD of the OEM insert but from memory, it is smaller and you might be right, speaking i.d.

Another coincidence 200 1991

Hi, again.
I was on another Volvo list and this came up:

"...I had installed a Volvo OE accessory hitch on my '91-745T. Overpriced. And the receiver/drawbar is a very odd 1 5/8". You can't find drawbars for it anywhere but at Volvo...."

I guess 1-5/8" is another way to describe my 1.64" size :-).
Take care.

Another coincidence 200 1991

Yes, that is it, the ID of Volvo 240 hitch receiver is 2" X 2" and OD of ball mount is. 1 5/8" square. I should have known right off that is the discrepancy. Since those OEM ball mounts are so much harder to find than are hitches, I just take a 2 x 2 ball mount from a non-Volvo hitch and use that. Works OK, the fit is much less sloppy.

We must have different parts :-) 200 1991

re: "...The i.d. of the hitch measures 2 1/16" x 2 1/16" and does in fact accept the 2" x 2" nominal ball mount..."

Your measurement describes what conventional receivers are ... on my pre-'86 Volvo hitches, on my M-B truck hitch, on my domestic truck hitch, etc. Really, when I got that latest Volvo hitch, I couldn't understand this difference and even asked my dealer about it. He said, "yeah, these use a weird sized insert!"

Just one of those things!
Best regards,
Ken
