Headlight signaling (momentary) relay location? 1800

Brickboarders;

This question is mostly directed at owners of non-US delivered 1800S models, as I don't believe these relays were installed on US-delivered cars (but stateside owners are certainly welcome to help(!)...even if relay was not installed, wiring was surely present in harness).

Where was this relay and its associated wiring located, when installed? Was it on the small electrical panel on which the fuse blocks were also located?

I need this info so that I can write up the procedure for upgrading 1800s to include the high-beam/lo-beam AND momemtary highbeam control through a bystable relay (like the later injected models had standard).

Thanks in advance for info.

Headlight signaling (momentary) relay location? 1800

Ron,

My 1966 1800S does have this feature and is a US export model. I believe I located the relay on the 1800 right next to the firewall on the inside of the drivers fender. When the directional signal switch is pulled towards the driver, the highbeams should come on weither the headlights are on or not. When the switch is released the high beams turn off.

This feature is routed through the same fuse as the tachometer power supply (Small two fuse block). I found this out because my relay was bad, and when the momentary highbeams were selected, the tach would lose power until the switch was released. I did determine that the relay was bad, but did not replaced it.

Good luck on the write up. Your site has saved me many hours of frustration.

Oliver;

Thanks for the info! Interesting! I didn't know the factory installed that feature for US delivered cars (are you certain this wasn't retrofitted by a PO?). I guess that means you still have a foot switch for hi/lo beam control, right?

I seem to recall that thread about the tach loosing power during headlight flashing...I must have written it then, but it STILL sure sounds like the symptoms of a high voltage-drop, under load of the relay coil, caused the tach problem...are you sure it is a "bad" relay, and not the Lucas curse of the poor fuseblock design, in action (as described in: http://www.intelab.com/swem/gastight_II.htm under Symptoms)? I want to reread that thread...do you recall when it was posted or better yet, have the URL?

Thanks for the kind words to the site.

Regarding selling your car....you'll be sooorrryyy!!!

Cheers

On the 164 and 122 it is located on the inside of the left fenderwell with
other relays and is about the same as dimmer relays used on VWs and other
cars (which will work for a 122 conversion, and the wires will reach from
the floor-mounted dimmer originally installed also).
