'Catalyser', engine, and year? 200 1991

Forgive my American and very limited knowledge of cars, but what's a "catalyser"? If these are in the American 240s, why don't ours have that logo on them?

What's the deal with the 2.0L engine? I see on this page that some 2.0L engines were used in 240s, but I've never come across any examples before. At least in the US, I thought that Volvo was only putting 2.3L engines in the 240s after the conclusion of the turbo and diesel lines. Was it different in the UK? Were there ever 2.0 and 2.3L 240s produced simultaneously in the same country? Was there any way to distinguish between the engine sizes in 240s, other than the country of origin?

The car was registered in 1991. Does that mean it is a 1990 or 1991 model (or could it be some other year entirely)? I thought they stopped with the "GL" designation after 1989 (DL stood for GL, and former DLs were now just "240"). Was it different in Europe/the UK?

My post has aroused a series of questions about US/UK differences in 240s. I appreciate the time anyone takes to answer them!

'catalyser'=catalytic converter. They were standard on all
US Volvos after a certain year, because they needed to be installed
to meet emissions standards. US (especially California) emissions
standards were much stricter than Europe's standards until quite
recently.

The B200 uses the same block as the B230, but has a smaller
displacement. I'm not sure if it's sleeved down to give a smaller
bore, or if the crank stroke is shorter. It was used in European
Volvos because with gas being more expensive over there, fuel economy
is more important. Some countries also levied an extra sales tax
on cars above a certain engine displacement.

England was especially wierd in this regard - they taxed based
on piston area, which lead to a generation of British cars
with narrow piston bores and long strokes.

I think that the bore and stroke were altered to get the 1986cc B200 E and F engines. I gather that some European countries offered 'tax breaks' on new cars with engines less than 2000cc. This only applied to company cars in the UK, however.

A 'Catalyser' is indeed a catalytic convertor. Many pre-1992 UK model Volvos had a 'Catalyser' badge on their rear ends to show off which was then a novelty-'Cats' became compulsory on British gasoline engined cars in mid-1992.
