What other features can be placed in the 240's instrument panel where the cig lighter, 4ways, a.c., rear window defrost are?
thanks

I have alwayes liked the pre-81 center consoles because they have the lighter below the row of buttons thus it allows you one extra slot. Also when I did the pre-81 --> 81+ style dash swap on my 79 264GL I moved the light dimmer switch just above the headlight switch so that gave me another slot to place a
switch in. Here is a picture of what my center console setup looks like now:

One option I have is to move the power window switched over to the door panels like the 80+ models but I'm still up in the air about that swap. I really like the pre-80 setup and I thinks it looks nicer than the later door panel setup but one thing about the door panel switches is that you can control all of the windows with only one hand. Ahh the choices... Take Care!

Sincerely,

I love the look of those old lightup switches and I've got to have that foglamp switch someday. I might even try and grab an old 242 grille and the OEM foglights to match it.

That's a long way off though, I only just secured the money to buy a starter.

That is the same idea I have. I just finished with the Flathood conversion on the 79 264GL. I went from the 4 square lights to the 7" round lights. I think it looks great but I would like to have the old 242 grill so I can have those driving lights. Then I can use the FOG LIGHT SWITCH as it was meant to be used. Currently I have the fog light switch wired to ground the coolant temp sensor so I can have an easy idle till the engine warms up. I have a break in the wiring somewhere but I will look for it later. Take Care!

Sincerely,

I was just on the phone to my Volvo wreaker about the starter (should have it before the weekend if I'm lucky) and he has the foglight brackets, grill and lights to do the job, for about 120 of our crappy Australian dollars. (about 80 of yours)

Once I've bought important stuff like brake rotors, shock absorbers and a new intank pump, I'm fitting foglights to the front grill. Along with all the other stuff I want to do.

I have installed on both my 240s the "on-off-switched" toggle that controls the right front footwell light.

Also have - on my daily driver - a switch that controls power to the radar detector that lights a red LED warning when off.

Previous 245GL had a momentary contact switch that allowed one to hold it in and have power to power windows. Helpful if one must run out of house to roll up windows when hot day turnes into sudden rainstorm and using key just slows one down. Also allows one to send a "gopher" from office to go roll up windows and not have to give him keys.

The cigar lighter seems a permanent built-in thing, integral with the control panel itself. Installing something in the hole is quite possible.

Dream outside the box - install whatever you like.

Good Luck,

Bob

What are the laws where you live regarding radar detectors? Here in Australia they carry some pretty heavy penalties for installing, but one manufacter has just got around it with a GPS system that tells you where all the speed camera's are, not illegal cos it's not a radar.

The laws vary from state to state here in the U.S. on radar detectors. Some states allow it, others don't. Some are strict enforceing it, others don't really mind. Here in Florida, at least in POLK county, there's no law against having one.

Heated seat switches work nicley in there as well, I have strobes wired to the "hotseat" switch (used for oversized load escort in the past)

Additional switch for door locks on DL models.
Run fuel pumps only switch.
Run lambda/frequency valve only switch.
Fuel mixture bar graph indicator.
A/C compressor on LED.
Fog lights on/off switch.
Trunk release switch (nobody will know).
Switch for extra foot well interior lights.
Switch for anti-theft system.

Trunk release switch (nobody will know).

I've never quite seen the point in these. You can open the boot without having to get out of the car, but until the design is improved, you then have to get out anyway to get at it's contents.

It would make sense on a miniature roadster like a Suzuki cappucino where you can reach the boot from the driver's seat, but on a Volvo 244 it's kinda redundant.

I've got an electric antenna switch, and a toggle auxillary electric cooling fan in my lineup. Have seen a balance/fader control for the radio there, and in the newer models, a switch for an electric sunroof. Anybody know of others?

My factory foglight (rear lights) switch is above the headlight knob (1989 240 GL sedan). Is that what you're talking about, or did some models come with front foglights? I can't recall seeing pictures of 240s that have OEM foglights; I didn't think they existed. Which models are like this?

Yes, some 200s came with factory fogs (like the 242GTs). Those had the old style switches (all plastic with sharp corners). There's also a newer style rounded edge version of the front fog light switch (it's green).

There were also some blank switches (I've got a purple one laying around here, I think blue was also availale) used for dealer installed accessories.
