possible 6 cyl to 4 cyl swap question--mounts & x-mbr 200

To any who have swapped out 6cyl engine for 4 cyl...

Do the 6cyl and 4 cyl mount to the same crossmember configuration? Or are the crossmembers in the 240s bolted in?

Am looking for best candidate to give home to good motor...a 264 is an option, but don't want to get into cut n' weld situation for this.

Thanks in advance!

You simply undo the engine mounts that bolt to the crossmember and they drop right into the next crossmember. The trans support is moved up a bolt hole or two, all of the holes have captive nuts in them already. The driveshaft is swapped complete, but the pinion flange may be different. Use the shaft that works anyways. The clutch mechanism is a bit of a bear, especially if the new car is an automatic now. Shift linkages for either are different lengths.
Check the wiring plug, but in most cases it is easy.
The rad, header tank, and all else are straightforward, as long as the donor car is nearby.
The biggest job is swapping the front springs to the four cylinder ones as the car will sit way too high with the V-6 springs and a four cylinder under the hood.
I have done it a few times, but from this point I am not doing any more. It is a worthwhile thing to do if you have the time though.

That's good to know, except that the shifter linkage may be a problem .
The recipient is an automatic, the donor engine a wrecked B21FT w/M46 tranny.
I really like the looks of the older 264 w/the old 164 style trunk lid, but am wondering if I'd be better off finding a later model 24x w/manual. Of course, that comes with it's price too (LH back to K-jet...I'll tackle a FI system change only after I've got what I know runs back running in new body).

As usual for me, I'll probably spend much sweat and effort & end up with a car I could have bought for the same $$$ only already put together :o|

If you can find the torque convertor adapter plate and bushing for the B21FT crankshaft, just slide the four banger onto the automatic. You will also have to find a B21 auto bellhousing, and all it takes is four bolts. A new shifter link rod, or shorten the one for the V-6 trans and that's it. No messing around with the clutch pedal, and the V-6 trans shift program is just fine with the turbo. Putting the M46 in would be a lot of work.

Hello,

It would be a good idea to have both the donor and reciever side by side as yuo were doing the job to make sure everything goes in the way it should (some components are placed differently in a 260), but as far as I know it's just plug and play. No mounting differences that I am aware of.
