Is it easy to remove a cruise control from a 245 200 1986

I found this car in the pick-n-pull that is EXACTLY like mine... except it has cruise control and a luggage rack. after harvesting all morning Saturday from it I've been considering pulling the cruise control (just in case I want to make that upgrade one day!).

Does anyone know if this is an easy pull or if it would not be worth the time and effort?

thanks,

Jack

I installed a CC taken by someone else from a 1986+ and...... 200 1986

put it into my 1988 244GL wifemobile. Here's what might help you:

Engine bay:

Two units on the firewall.

One vacuum hose between them, one hose to somewhere to get vacuum (get all the fittings, including the brass on in the Intake manifold), and one long hose into the cabin.

Be sure to note the route taken by that long hose. Instructions call for it to enter the cabin through a grommet in a 1-inch hole in the firewall near the steering column penetratin point.

Wiring harness from the engine bay unit. Long harness, enters the cabin somewhere. Instructions call for it to be stuffed through the hole where the hood release cable enters cabin. AND - the terminals must be removed from their plastic housing to do that.

For these two cabin entry points I made two holes in the firewall about in front of the glove box. (The inside sound foam pad has perforations for clearance.) Then I used two grommets from ACE Hardware and a lot of marine sealant.

Both the long hose and the long harness must connect to items above the driver's right toe. If you do as I did, those two must cross the cabin bwteeen the firewall and the a/c heater air plenum. I had some 1/2 inch black nylon "pipe" which I cut to about 36 inches with a bevel on one end. It was easy to get the pipe into that space. Then feed the wires and vacuum hose into the pipe. From the driver's side end pull the pipe out of the car, leaving the hose and wire where they need to be.

Inside the cabin:

Most of the work will be under the dash. The "brain" should be bolted to a bracket around the steering column. Get that bracket. The servo connection to the gas pedal linkage uses a pin and key - don't loose them.

There are short vacuum hoses in there, too. Connect to the servo and the switch on the brake pedal (and clutch if a stick shift).

The harness connects to the brake light switch, the brain and the back of the speedometer. That last, orange wire, is easy to get off - but - you should learn the "feel" of that connection so as to make installation easier (eliminate need to remove cluster).

The harness to the stalk can be threaded out. You will need to remove all the steering wheel surround. Bolts from the bottom (use a mirror), screws from the top, and bolts into the dash at either side. Pop off the piece that covers the left side bolt head. I think the piece covers ahole for a choke cable.

It can be a long job, but a working CC is really enjoyable. I use it on longer suburban roads in additoin to highway driving.

Good Luck,

Bob

Yes do it, I did and it's worth the effort. Make sure you get the wire harness that plugs into the brake swtt./turn signal/brain plugs.

I Pick 'n Pulled one a week ago. 1-1/2 hours in the car in 104F....fun. It was from an 84, so maybe a little different - the servo operates the throttle via a cable to the throttle drum. This is a special drum unique to cruise-equipped cars, so don't miss getting this piece. And on the mechanical speedo cars there's a little magnetic pickup on the back of the speedo housing which provides the speed signal to the "Governor" (Volvo's term for the electronics).

I think (repeat: 'think') the post-85 cars had the cable act on the gas pedal?

Anyhow, as Rich says you need to just be thorough in pulling every last piece, and make notes/photos of where it all hooks up. As to whether it will work - they're a pretty reliable piece (supplier in early 80's and maybe later was Dana Corp) but you won't know until you have it completely installed. I've got the identical Dana (but aftermarket version) on our 83 and it's worked fine for 20 years. I still have the installation and troubleshooting instructions, so if yours doesn't work give me a holler.

Hello,

Quite easy. Cruise in a 240 was mostly a dealer add on. Most of the guts are on the driver's side. Start with removing the turn signal stalk and just trace your way using the extra harness to all the components. You'll also have to grab the vac unit under the hood (attached to the back firewall). The only real PITA I found was getting the little cable off the accelerator pedal.

Install is simple and almost fool proof.

Thanks!

were these add-ons fairly reliable or will I also be looking forward to repairing it once installed?

I haven't had a problem with mine yet... seems like a good system.
