Allstate’s independent insurance adjuster rolled up in his Crown Vic former police cruser and checked out the damage. At a quick second glance determined that the car was not backed into a pole. My son’s arm pits are spared. This guy was sharp and pointed out some of the “crime scene” damage made by pushing back the trunk lid. On his cell phone, within seconds had a price and a quote number for a used trunk lid for $288. He disallowed the lights because used boot lids come with the lights, but did allow a new bumper cover.

He is cutting a check for around $1500 will “work with” any of the body shops I mentioned. Without time and energy I am leaning toward the body shop. Hey, I learnt body work on one of the greatest automotive mistakes made, a Chevy Vega.

Summery, they won't let you get rich off using your own labor. Good news, no ins rate increase.

    Tom:

I scanned in a few pages from the Volvo body repair manual (identifying what type of plastic is used where on the 940).

What I suppose might interest you is page number 10. How to remove dents from the bumper cover (just heat it up, but hey pictures are nice). There are also a few recommendations on how to use filler on the plastic bumper pieces which I haven't scanned in.

Of course if you're going to have your insurance pay for a new buymper cover, it's probably all a moot point.

      Whoops, sorry, double post.

I really don't like this forum's software, though I love the site itself. Why can't I delete misposts like this?

===> Of course if you're going to have your insurance pay for a new buymper cover, it's probably all a moot point. <====

It's not a moot point. Take the check for $1,500, try to fix it yourself to what looks "decent" (it is a 10 year old car, after all). Put the $1,500 minus what you spend in some investment device towards your next vehicle.

Are you in the U.K.? (you referenced the trunk as a "boot") If so, I don't know how the insurance companies work there, so I don't know if you can take the money for the damage and not actually pay somebody to do the work (which you can do in the US).

North Carolina. I’m learning the Queen’s English by reading the 940 Haynes. Boot, bonnet, dizzy cap, dizzy wheel, propeller shaft.

The insurance is writing a check for $1500 and I don’t even have to replace the broken tail light for all they care. The bumper cover may be repairable. I's still like to replace the hood. It's all time and energy.

Heh, same here. I was changing my antenna and couldn't believe that the Haynes manual didn't cover it, then a little later I stumbled across it (it's called an aerial). And don't forget the estate / saloon body styles.
