Timing belt job (in the midst) 900

For a first timer, remove the fan, it gives extra room. ...I am trying to get the new belt back on...it s as if its too small, but I compared it to the old belt and the old part number and it checks out. I have now removed the tensioner..again..and compressing it all the way in, by the way, get a strong nail to hold it back, it bent the last one. Fixing to go back out there and putting the tensioner on again. Any quick responses would be great now guys.

I seem to recall installing the belt without the tensioner. Then put the lower bolt holding the tensioner to the block and rotate the tensioner into position to fasten the upper bolt. Then pull the pin.

The problem I've had is that the belt would be off by a single tooth by the time the tension was restored, necessitating redoing the whole thing. A recent post suggested using a tie wrap to hold the belt in position on the cam gears to prevent them from slipping a tooth while you're adding the tensioner.

Also make sure you've checked the timing belt faq section, if you haven't already done so.

Good luck.

Robert

Well I finally got it guys. I isntalled the belt from the crank directly to everything else less the first ideler pulley. Then forcefully slid it on to the idler pulley and then released the pin. Turned at the crank by hand 3 times and everything lined up. Just finished putting it all back together. In for lunch, will start it up afterwards. If no reply...all went well. If you hear from me again..its gonna be an oh s--t call!!

Hey John, I'm glad everything went well. Just think the next time you do the job you won't have to compress the tensioner, because you will have a new one. Pauli

Are you talking about a 960? What year?

If it's a late model 960 and the belt appears too small but is not, make sure the belt is seated on the crank pulley correctly and not sitting on the metal safety peg that sticks out below the pulley, this will appear to remove about 1/2- 1 inch or so of your belt length.

92 960. I just reinstalled the tensioner, no luck. i am starting the belt from the crank, to the ideler to the intake and exhasut to the water pump and I just can't get it on the the tensioner pulley. I dont' want to pull too juch and cause the intake/exhaust cams to move. Any other ideas?

Starting at the crank is the best place to start. Did you confirm that the belt is not sitting on the safety pin sticking out from the block at the bottom of the crank gear?

When I install them, I leave the tensioner OUT, and install the belt over the tensioner pulley so that the pulley has a lot of movement. I then install the tensioner and pull the pin.
