ZF4P22 Fluid change 700

Hi:

I'm changing the trans fluid on my 760 Turbo Diesel with the ZF4p22. What fluid should I use? The manual calls for Type F or G. I understand this is an old Ford standard that has probably been superceeded.

Thanks

Are you sure it's a ZF4P22 - not ZFHP22 ?

The ZFHP22 tranny originally took Dexron II, so Dexron III should work fine. I just refilled mine by the way.

Oh by the way. I called mobil. They said their Mobil1 syn ATF was not compatible.

If you're reading the original owners manual that came with the car (proper year and intended for your engine & tranny), then I would stay with what it recommends. The Type-F fluid I believe has been superceeded with Type-FA, and there are plenty of companies that make it. You shouldn't have any problem finding shelf stock at your local autoparts store.

I would also advise removing and cleaning the transmission pan and the magnet BEFORE your flush the fluid. More info on that subject here. Also, when posting on the brickboard, it helps us a lot when you tell us what year vehicle you have. There's a selection tab right below the subject line where you can list what vehicle you have. Since there were changes during production, we can confirm if you are indeed using the correct fluid. (the early transmissons use Type-F ATF (now superceeded by Type-FA ATF), and the later ones use Dex-II ATF (now superceeded by Dex-III ATF).

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

ZF4P22 Fluid change 700

Sorry guys, it's a 1983 760 GLE Turbo Diesel with the ZF4P22. The original manual, in the glove compartment, says to use type F or G. I still see F in some stores. I found this at an oil website.

CAUTION: Mixing different types of fluid can affect the way the transmission shifts and feels. Using the pre 80’s Ford F Type fluid in an application that calls for Dexron II may make the transmission shift too harshly. Using Dexron II in a transmission that has Type F may allow the transmission to slip under heavy load, which can accelerate clutch wear. So it is beneficial to ensure a full system flush is carried out using dedicated equipment prior to refilling with clean new fluid.

I will do a system flush, as explained in the FAQ's but I'm still unsure of the oil to use. I'm leaning towards Type F because of the above statement and the Owner's manual.

Thanks

"Sorry guys, it's a 1983 760 GLE Turbo Diesel with the ZF4P22."

I just pulled up the specs from Volvo (and a copy of the owners manaul for your car). You're going to want to use Dexron fluid in your automatic '83 ZF4HP22. If you had an M46 Manual Transmisson (stick-shift), then you would use Type-F. Here's a quote from page #98 (fluids) in your '83 760 Owners manual:

Transmission:
-------------ATF type F or G (manual), Capacity of 2.4 US qts.
-------------ATF Dexron IID (automatic) Capacity of 8.1 US qts.

Final drive:
-------------API-GL-5 (MILL2105 B or C) SAE 90 or 80 W/90 Capacity 1.7 US qts.

Power steering:
-------------ATF Capacity 0.8 US qts.

Brake fluid:
-------------Brake fluid type DOT 4 (or SAE J 1703), Capacity 0.45 US qts.

Remember, Dexron II has been superceeded by DexronIII (aka Dex3), and is basically the same as Mercon (new Ford type). Most parts stores will sell you a bottle of ATF marked "DexronIII/Mercon" as current stock shelf, and this is the correct fluid for your vehicle. If you had a stick-shift/manual transmission, you would indeed need Type F fluid (or Type FA as Type F has been superceeded).

Don't forget to clean the pan and magnet before you flush the fluid. (see hyperlink in my previous post) Also, the listed capacity of 8 quarts for your automatic transmission is assuming that you are filling it from a dry state (brand new from Volvo), and does not account for the fact that you will be draining and refilling the pan first (about 3 to 4 quarts). Plan to refill the 4 quarts that's down in the pan (by filling through the tranny dip stick tube) after you've cleaned the magnet and remove the sediment, and then flush (using the tranny cooler line) with an additional 6 to 8 quarts to get most of the fluid changed in the Torque Converter and Valve Body (both of which do not drain down on their own and hold about 4 to 5 quarts of fluid total). If you flush 8 quarts through the tranny after draining and refilling the pan, you should be about 75% to 80% effective in flushing the old fluid out, -and this is acceptable. If this seems a bit confusing, imagine the Torque Converter as a 1 gallon bucket of fluid and you're dumping in a quart and then removing a quart without actually draining the whole thing. There's a bit of mixing going on between the old and new fluid.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
