Just changed the dist. in a 1986 n/a. Borrowed a timing light. What are the steps in setting the timing. TIA

here's how you do it. 700

    jonny,

As you know there are two 10mm bolts holding the distributor on. Loosen both of them, just enough to turn the distributor.

Now, with the timing light hooked up to the #1 cylinder, slowly turn the distributor and watch the timing mark change to about 12degrees BTDC. Just aim for a little to the left of the 10 degree line.

Once the timing is where you want it, tighten whichever bolt you can get to first, shut the engine off, then tighten the other one.

    Restart and verify.

    Have a beer.

    Mike

I would check the timing before you loosen the distributor bolts, as the timing on these engines rarely goes off. So you might find you dont need to adjust it after all.

      Thanks tbell
That is what i was looking for. I was wondering if i had to unhook anything before making the adjustment.

        No worries dude.

No, you don't have to unhook anything. It's pretty easy actually. Just make sure not to loosen the 10mm bolts too far or the distributor may slip after you've set it.

There seems to be a mistaken impression on this board that you can't adjust the timing on these cars... you certainly can.

You don't. Any symptoms that make you want to check it?

I was under the assumption that after checking the timing, you could adjust the timing (if needed) by rotating the distributor on a 1986 model.

I didn't say you can't, just shouldn't have to. Other things to check first, timing belt off a tooth or two? Throttle body dirty? Bad engine wiring harness, etc.
I have an 85(I bought it new) and have never had to set the timing.

You can just as you describe. Set the base idle speed and CO while you are at it. See the FAQ for all three adjustments.

          Dan,

Just out of curiosity I went to the FAQ because I don't know much about earlier 700 ignitions (EZK 115?), but came up dry on this one. I looked under ELECTRICAL: IGNITION SYSTEM with no luck. Could you post the URL?

I am not able to find info in the FAQ section on setting timing. I guess i am not looking inthe right spot either. Please post the URL if you know where it is. Thanks
