heat shield woes 200

The heat shield(s) on my 93 240 rattles at certain speeds. I had a local shop attempt to weld it to quiet it down. It helped a little, but it's still annoying. Does anyone have a remedy? Thanks!

Get a better radio.

Seriously, some people have reported some limited success using hose clamps. Personally I've never tried that myself, opting for the hammer-and-chisel method instead.

Originally there was some factory insulation material (asbestos???) packed in behind the shields too, which helped to keep things from buzzing, but that is all long gone by now. Still, try not to eat or breath what's left of it.

The only downside I can see is the exhaust gasses might cool down faster making the cat a little less efficient, particularly in colder climates. But I don't think there are E-tests in Nunavut anyway, so that should rarely be an issue. And the tall-grass-on-fire comes up too, but again, I try to limit the amount of off-roading I do.

Every Volvo shop has got a big pile of old heatshield tin out back. Just knock those things off with a hammer and pry bar or big screwdriver, and no more strange noises. They lose the welds to the pipe, but the two halves of the shield stay welded together and need a little more encouragement to fall off.

Cut the Effer off and save yourself while you can....

Get rid of 'em, or at least the offending one. You'll probably find that you'll be getting rid of them one by one as the each start to rattle.

You can try prying or cutting them off in just about whatever manner you have at your disposal. Just try not to bang on them too hard or you might create an exhaust leak and have to replace a gasket or two.

The best cure is to carefully remove it. You really don't need it; just don't park in a leaf pile right after a hot run. Be careful not to puncture the pipe(s) when you wrestle with it.
