940 Turbo Wagon Stalls 900 1993

Greetings everyone.

I'm hoping somemone can help me out with my '93 940 Turbo Wagon. Here's the problem and the story behind it (sorry it's so long):

The car stalls. Normally, it will stall when slowing to take corners or after stopped to make a left, although it has stalled when traveling straight at about 35 mph. The car gives no warning that it's about to die, I just notice there's no power or steering and all the dash lights are on. Sometimes, the car will start right back up. Last week, I stopped at the store before work, came back out and tried to start the car but it wouldn't. I tried periodically for an hour and a half, no joy. I thought, well... whatever's ailing finally kicked the bucket. I called my mechanic who came out with the tow truck. He tried to start it and didn't succeed. They tow the car back to the shop and got ready to work on it. They try to start it one more time and it cranked right up. I told them to keep and drive the car and try to recreate the problem. They had it for 4 days and could never break it. I asked them to check the Fuel Pump Relay, which they said was fine. I finally said screw it and picked it up. No problem for 2 days. Then, on Thanksgiving, it died while going about 35 down the road. It wouldn't start again. It sat for an entire week with me trying to start it about 5 different times (didn't want to pay another towing and diagnostics charge for nothing). Never worked. Yesterday I decided to go ahead and get towed to the shop. I went to check on it and it started right up. This is absolutely driving me crazy. Any ideas? Thanks for any help!

In addition to the good advise given by the previous responder--Id also check the plug to the amm--carefully remove it and clean it with compressed air if available to you and inspect the connection for possible corrosion. I say this as Iv had this problem from time to time over the years on our 945 turbo and it was a matter of just removing the connection -checking it out as desribed above--re attaching and would be ok for 8-12 months. Other than that-had a bad coil give me similar problems--the coild would get super hot--and problems similar as yours. Good luck ...

Go to the 700/900 FAQ Feature Section on this site (link at the top of the form page). Read through the Engine Tune and Performance Symptoms section -especially the diagnostic stuff. My guess is that your system relay is going south (they can sometimes be re-soldered). It could also be a failing RPM sensor on the bell housing.

You may have a faulty ignition switch. Age, heat, vibration & dirt are the enemies of electrical components.

Good luck.

Hi,

i was wondering if you got your car going. Well, one thing that I found out about my stalling problem was when it was raining. Was it raining when your car stalled? If so you might want to do this test and see if this is the problem. On my 940 the windshield spray nozzle on the passenger side had a hole that would let the water leak right on top of the distributor. This caused the car to stall and would be okay after letting it dry. If this is not the case then let me know how you fixed your car. Because tight now my car is not starting either and stalled out...thanks!!!
