how hard is it to switch transmissions? auto to manual 𖑀] 200 1990

If I buy an automatic (hopefully a 90-93 240 GL sedan)and want to switch it over to a manual - what would I be getting myself into? I just replaced the blower fan/ heater valve in my old brick- thats the hardest thing I've done. how would this compare?
thanks
Luke

I've thought about doing the same thing to my '91. I've got two early 80's parts cars with M46s too. The thing that's slowing me down is the '91 needs a flywheel with the crank sender. Something about the later bellhousings is different too, though I've heard a person can notch the earlier bellhousings to fit the crank signal sensor.

Here is a website I found awhile back that might help.

I think it would be easier than the heater core/fan job. I did a BW55 (AT) to M46 (MT) tranny swap on my 1979 264GL and I must say that it is the best thing I have ever done. Your swap shall be just as easy and enjoyable. I think you will have to get the M47 and a couple more electronic components but you should be able to get the job done. Take Care!

Sincerely,

why would he need to use the m47 as opposed to the m46? 200 1990

I'm all for the swap too, as the car I'm interested in also has the AW70 trans. It works great and all, but after a while I'm sure I'll get bored with the slushbox, and would want a 5 speed again. The reason why I'm asking is cause the m46 i supposidely mroe durable than the m47, that's why I'd prefer the m46.

Easier than a heater core, but parts weigh more :) 200 1990

I did a AW70 to M46 swap on my 91 240 about a year after I bought it. Wasn't all that hard. Email me at runabout4fun@yahoo.com if you want some more details.

I've done this on an '83 Turbo - task was greatly simplified by using a complete manual transmission donor car of approx. the same age as yours - that way you have all the stuff (flywheels, clutch pedal set-up, etc.) you need to convert. Take lots of photos from underneath the donor car, under the dash and under the hood BEFORE you start to disassemble...

Hey Analogdad: Were the photos you took digital photos, or analog photos? ;)

It would be easier if the console and interior were out. Hanging a clutch pedal under the dash is tiring work when you're all cramped up under there.
