760 turbo-thermostat question 700

Hi All,

Is there anyway that I can put a hotter thermostat in my '84 760 Turbo. My temp gauge only goes to the 1/4 mark. I replaced the thermostat with an OE one from the dealer and it still does the same thing. I was just wondering if there's a higher temp thermostat available.

Thanks,
Dave

    760 turbo-thermostat question 700

    Hi Dave.
Check to see if the cooling fan (run by the water pump)is blowing air all the time.Start the engine and feel by your hand on top of the valve cover for lot of air (BE CAREFUL OF THE RUNNING FAN). It could be the fan clutch is seized in some way resulting in too much air being blown.Did the engine use to get hotter before you put a new thermostat?.
Good luck and keep us posted.

      760 turbo-thermostat question 700

      Hi Charles,

When the cooling fan is engaged, doesn't the engine make more noise? I thought it was supposed to make a whooshing sound when the clutch was engaged and quiet down when it disengaged. I'll double check though as it does sound like the fan is running all of the time. Before I changed the thermostat, it kept the same temp. It seems like most of my other Volvos usually run around the half way mark ( or just a bit below it).

      Thanks,
      Dave

    760 turbo-thermostat question 700

According to the Haynes manual (82-91 740 & 760), there are two choices: One is called type 1 and the other type 2. Type 1 opens between 187-190F. Type 2 (which would be hotter) opens between 196-199F.

It appears that IPD (www.ipdusa.com) sells both. Their catalog shows one for the 700 series that opens at 191F and one that opens at 197F.

I would would probably also check the temperature sensor and temperature guage.

Thanks for the info on the thermostat. The temp sender and gauge have been replaced.

sounds like you may be dealing with something that a hotter t-stat will only mask.

What do you suggest that I check? Some engines just seem to run cooler.

          Thanks,
          Dave

Retarded ignition timing, internal coolant leakage, a bunch of things. Just do a general check of the FI and ignition systems. Also how is the engine mechanically?

I never have to add any coolant to it. My aunt bought this car new in '84. I got it in 2000 and we both always kept the service up to date. So, mechanically the engine is great. In my opinion, the B23 FT was the best engine that Volvo ever put in these cars. How do I check the timing? At idle with the transmission in neutral? What should the setting be?

              Thanks,
              Dave
