      Cam Plug/Seal retainer 200

      Below is Don Foster's low-buck version of IPD's seal retainer.

        Cam Plug/Seal retainer 200

        Hi again;

        I would not at all recomment this kind of solution; if these plugs pop out it's becxause the pressure in the crankcase gets way too high, reason being blocked flame trap usually (or worn out engine). This solution will allow the high pressure to blow out all seals, and the engine gets ruined anyway. Looks rather silly to me.

          Cam Plug/Seal retainer isn't a 'solution'... 200

          ... nor is the cam seal plug meant to be a pop-off pressure release.

          I've had that plug come out on a 200K+ 240 that always had a well-maintained flametrap system. A lot of oil was quickly lost at highway speeds.

          I don't see any harm in a "retainer" to prevent such a potential disaster.

          I suspect there are many uninformed Volvo drivers with clogged flame traps. I don't say we should ignore the PCV system, but IMO, weeping seals are a less severe penalty for such neglect than dumping oil from the rear cam plug.

          I might think differently if I'd ever seen, or even heard of, a confirmed case of all seals being "blown out" by excessive crankcase pressure. Based on 40+ years with Volvos, seeing is believing.

    oil all over fire wall, rear cam plug?? 200

    Hi; If it is or recently has been really cold where you live, I think I know what's your problem. I had the same thing on my wife's Volvo 360 (B200K engine) years ago, spitting oil all over from somewhere back of the engine. It's a cheap fix and it's easy if you do it now. At cold weather, the flame trap can clog completely and cause the pressure in the crankcase to increase so that a kind of plug (tin cover, looks really cheap) at the backside of the top may pop out, causing this oil mist which rapidly will cover your fire wall.

    You must get a new plug at your OEM Volvo dealer (very cheap). Easy to install, use a piece of wood and a small hammer to gently push it in. After that, you need to do something with your flame trap, there are numerous threads on that in this forum. Some, even Volvo mechanics say that you should just take it out and forget it, others stick to regular maintenance (relatively easy and cheap) of this device. If you do NOT do this now, you will over time end up blowing all of the seals in the engine, and the problem gets far bigger.

    Last, clean up the mess and your engine is good as new again.

    Godd luck - Ola.

    You can also buy or make a little strip of metal that will bolt to the two holes that are already in the back of your head. The metal retainer will prevent the cam plug from blowing out again, but if you are building pressure in your crankcase, something else will blow out.

    hi there, what i did is remove valve cover, and if i remember right the rear cam cap. clean area, put a little silecone around plug reinstall parts. then check flame trap and oil seperator and search for a possible cause. good luck
