Speedometer Cable Drive Gears 140-160 1971

After swapping in an M41 for the BW35 the 142E came with, my speedometer appears to read 8 - 10 mph lower than the actual speed, which makes me think I should try a drive gear with fewer teeth. I have no idea how many teeth there are on the gear that's in there now, so first order of business is to take a look at it. I have pulled that gear on another M41, but I can't remember if that was before or after I filled it with oil. Questions: Can I remove the drive gear without draining the tranny? Quick action with a cork? Anyone know of a site with info on these gears? Does Volvo still sell them? Any input will be much appreciated.
Bob S.

Scandcar has these listed on their website:

    http://volvoklassiekeronderdelen.nl/shopping/default.php?cPath=5_325&sort=1a&page=5

A variety of diiferent gears are listed, anywhere from 13 to 20 teeth. Might want to check with Scandcar on availablility and info, I've dealt with them in past, very courteous and excellent pricing/ availability on many parts (compared to USA sources)

I have removed the gear from my M40 tranny (filled with fluid) and only a few drips... not sure if I was lucky, or that's the norm.

The gear on the OD is different from the gear on the tranny.
It MAY be the same as the gear on the BW. (I don't know, never had a BW.)

Yes, I assumed they were different because with the BW the speedometer was about as accurate as these ribbon jobbies ever get. Maybe I should have saved the gear out of the automatic, but that's water under the bridge now because it went to the dump a long time ago. The question is still, can I get the gear out of the OD, so I can count the teeth, without spilling the oil? Apparently, as Damian says, that is so for the M40. So, I would assume the same goes for the M41. What do you think, George?

I did spil oil when I did that on a M46 with J-type OD. Like George said, keep a bucket under there, and/or tilt the car a bit to the left.

The gear in the M410 is bigger and comes out of a bigger hole.
I think I would have a bucket handy - one that fits under the OD.
