K-Jet pros, need help with cold starts, Control Pressure Regulator? 200 1984

1984 245 Ti, pretty sure it was intercooled at dealership after purchase.

I live in Wisconsin, so this thing has been a pain to start so far this winter. I've had it for 2 months already. Temperature now is like 30 fahrenheit in the mornings.

The car will fire right up, but then die. It will do this numerous times, so I usually give it a little gas when starting. It will run then, but I have to hold the gas and sometimes even pump it because the idle will still fluctuate even if I hold the pedal in the same position. After its started, I give it gas for about 20 seconds, then let off. It will idle by itself at around 1000 rpms, as shown by tach in cluster. If I give it gas again, it will sputter first then slowly rev back up, so driving away is tricky.

It will idle fine but runs like crap until it is warmed up a little bit. Once its warmed up, it runs great.

After reading the Bentley it seems the start injector only sprays fuel for a few seconds while the engine is cranking, so I assume that this is working because it always fires right up.

Since it dies immediately, it seems there is a fault with the Control Pressure Regulator which should richen the mixture until it is warmed up, when it is then cut out by a thermal switch, correct??

If I'm on the right track here, I know there are fuel lines, electrical wires, and vacuum lines running to this little unit which is behind the distributor. How should I begin to diagnose why this CPR isn't workign right??

Thanks Guys, this one is a little trickier, I appreciate the help,

Smith :-)

Thanks Guys, I dont' have time until SAturday afternoon to look at it :-( because of work and school. But I'd definitely look into it some more--> the thermal switch and the valve. Until then, I just gotta let it warm up and give it gas until then.

I'll check back when I get around to it!

Smith

Hello,

On my 82 that problem turned out to be leaking injector seals. They were all dried out and hard. After replacement all the cold start problems went away. Hope that helps.

Mario

I think you have identified the CPR as the problem correctly. The thermal switch controls the cold start injector. The CPR has an internal heating element and bimetallic actuator that responds to temperature and varies the control pressure to the fuel distributor. There is a three-digit part number on the top of the casting near the vent. A B21F turbo 1981- should be 079. A few people have opened and cleaned the CPR with good results but it is a pain to remove what with the position and high-pressure hoses. Try an archive search. To verify the control pressure as the problem requires the K-jet fuel system test gauge. The best price (~$70) is reported to be JC Whitney.

Is that what you're talking about for testing fuel pressure?? Just from the picture it doesn't look like it has the right connections, all those banjo fittings. It would be useful to me I think though, I need to get the k-jet all tuned up on 2 of my cars.

Where can you find the washers for the banjo fittings on the fuel distributor, Cpr, and everywhere else? Besides the dealer where they're like 2 bucks a piece, I'm guessing.

I've never bought anythign off of JC whitney before.....

hi there, i purchased the bosch c.i.s. fuel injection tester from j.c. whitney. it looks simular to the one in your link. but i cant confirm this. call them by phone. on my box it says = TU-14C it came with the hoses hooked up to the fittings and guage. and also a bag of different connectors, everything i needed to test. my car is turbo so i made the hookup at the fuel dist. art benstien i believe used this on non turbo k-jet and said it had all fittings included. he hooked up to the c.p.r. hope this helps. the banjo washers may not be two dollars at volvo? probably one dollar like the oil drain plug washer. check f.c.p. groton good luck. p.s. im no k-jet pro. :^}

JC Whitney and sorry, wrong about thermal switch. 200 1984

The JC Whitney part title and description sound right but the picture does look wrong. Others here have bought the tester from JCW and got all the right stuff. Someone should be able to verify the p/n for you.

On the '84 Ti there is as you've stated correctly a vacuum by-pass thermal switch located behind the distributor on the head. This switch allows the secondary stage on the CPR to engage when cold. The switch is easy to test, just pull it off and see if suction goes only one way, open cold closed hot. (I believe the early years the thermal switch was in the CPR).
It is most likely the CPR is the problem which can be re-built, but check all your vacuum lines first to make sure the secondary CPR is getting vacuum when cold.

Bentley shows that thermal valve / CPR connection to be for "Cold Accelleration Enrichment", so I doubt if it's related to a Cold Running problem.
