1989 240 dl wagon No- Start 200 1989

240 no start items not mentioned yet....

1) Do you hear the fuel pump(s) for a second when Key is turned ON? If not, see 3 and 4 below.

2) Ignition is usually reliable, but corroded/oxidized coil primary terminals #1 and/or #15 will kill it. The rest should be OK, from all you've replaced (except the RPM sensor, as mentioned by others). By design, an Ignition problem will prevent Fuel operation.

3) If you can verify spark at the plugs, go to the Fuel Injection relay on firewall above passenger's toes. Hold it and turn the key to ON (not start/crank). You should feel.hear it click whenever the key is turned ON. This is the FI System relay (the Fuel relay is also in there, but not active till cranking).

4) If no System relay click, check the 25 amp blade fuse near rhe coil. Even if it looks good, inspect the holder contacts and wiring, all the way to Battery +.

5) If it does click with Key ON, see if it clicks a 2nd time when cranking (Fuel relay). If no 2nd click, suspect the relay, or ECU is failing to energize it.

6) If no Fuel relay click, bypass it (and the 25 amp fuse) with a jumper wire from the Left side of fuse #6 to the Left side of fuse #4. Pumps will run immediately—try starting and let us know what happens.

Search this forum for no start conditions. There are many suggestions. The top two for no start are fuel pump relay and rpm (crank) sensor. The relay is easy to replace. The sensor is pretty straight forward but takes a little more effort. If you can wait for shipping FCP Groton is great source for these items.

Mark,
Can you get "coughing" from bad RPM sensor or bad fuel pump relay??
Our bad RPM sensor gave intermittent no-start till it became full-time no-start, but in between when running it ran fine.
When we had bad pump relays (or disconnected due to unruly front passenger kicking the firewall), it was dead, just dead, no warning, no coughing or sputtering.

You can get an unbelievable array of no start, intermittent start, poor running, bucking, barely running, running fine, etc. symptoms from the SAME faulty relay. I know this from direct experience.

Maybe one of the fuel pumps?
There are two, neither of which is a very easy job.

The '89 has a computer w/ "Check Engine" light and trouble codes.
If the computer detected a problem this system would activate.
Since it didn't, it would likely not be one of those problems.

BUT - verify the "Check Engine" light is working. Should light up when you start the car, when the other instrument cluster trouble lights come on.
If it doesn't light, likely the bulb is missing or burned out.
