Blower Fan Inop 200

My '92 245 has about 190K rounds on it and runs great! Why wouldn't it?! My problem-- hopped in the car this morning and fired her up. It was about 20 degrees out, not real cold, but the blower fan was on "3" and I didn't want cold air blowing on me so I turned it off. The fan was operating at the time I turned it off. After driving a few miles and the engine warmed up, I turned the fan on, but nothing. No sound or anything. My fuse is good. Any guesses? Is this common? This vehicle does have A/C in case that matters. Many thanks in advance! (Please don't tell me its another one of those wires that run through the tailgate hinge, haha!)

The death of a blower fan motor is usually preceded by a period during which you can hear something not right in there.

On my 1986 244, it is the sound of the turbine vanes barely rouching the housing as the fan slows. I can hear it only if the fan is operating on #3 or #4 at the time I turn the ignition off. Sound has been going on ow for months.

Did you have any such warning? If not, it may be an electrical failure (hope, hope) and thus easier to repair.

I have the cricuit diagram from the 1988 240. Your car may or may not be different.

Fuse is #3, ceramic blue 25 amp; there is nothing else on that circuit.

Power to the fan goes through a set of three resistors for speed control. All three in use on speed #1, only one on speed #3, and speed #4 gets full 12 volts.

Did switching the switch up and down ahve any effect?

There is a wire lead to the a/c switch, but it is only so that the fan will run when the a/c is set to run. No relation to the blower fan operation.

Replacing the fan motor is Plan Z, after fuse and wiring and all other checks.

Perhaps another brickster with newer wiring diagrams will respond.

Good Luck,

Bob

I did try disconnecting and reinstalling the (visually) good 25 amp fuse, jiggling it out and back in with the ignition on. No go. I have also spun the fan knob back and forth through the different speed settings with the ignition on with no results. I had no audible warning leading up to all of this. Thanks for the input, all of you.

The fuse can look OK but still not pass the amount of current needed to run the motor. With key on, blower switch on, wiggle/rotate the fuse in its holder. If this cures things, disconnect battery, and pull all fuses and clean the terminals in the box with a wire brush. (The fuses will also be corroded and it's cheap insurance to replace them).

If there's no result from the fuse test, the next cheapest possibility is a bad switch. You'll have to pull the center console to get at this. Finally, you are faced with motor replacement. Have a look at this site for an idea of the scope of work involved: http://users.erols.com/benstein/

Had you been having any problems with the motor?

If the fuse and wiring is good, then the motor most likely died. A blower motor replacement would be in order--have fun taking apart your car's dash! (Unfortunately, that's what happens, and the solution isn't a pretty one.)
