Leather for a 164e 140-160 1975

OK. Help. My front seats have just about had it. The leather is cracked and hard as a rock. The driver's seat is taped to keep the cusion from falling out and obviously, the heated seat no longer works (what a bummer :)). The rear bench is also hard as a rock. Now, the vinyl is in good shape on the sides and back.

What I need is a place that will "restore" the seats, put in new foam and springs/wires. I just might go with vinyl because it is that much cheaper, but that probably precludes finding a seat heater.

I checked with Scancar and (LOL) they want 2250 Euros and I pay the freight! And an outfit in OK city quoted me at $1700 starting price. Pretty steep for my budjet. Perhaps I should be on the lookout for another 1975 with black interior and buy the whole car! But the seats will probably need work, etc.

    Leather for a 164e 140-160 1975

When I got my 164e the leather was hard and cracked and even split in a couple of places. I didn't want to spend big bucks on a retrim so I invested $175 in a Leatherique restoration kit. This includes a conditioning oil, cleaner, dye, and crack filler.Enough to do all the seats. The kit recommends that you scrub the leather with paint thinners first and then apply the products in stages over about 4 days. It's actually the old surface coating that goes hard. As soon as you remove it, the leather is soft again. I took the seat covers off the seats and repaired the splits by gluing patches on the inside and filling the cracks on the outside with the crack filler. The filler is flexible and can be sanded down to the surface of the leather before you dye it. It was a lot of work but the result is unbelieveable. The leather is soft and supple and color is back to original. If your leather is not too torn up, this is the way to go. Much better than two grand for a retrim.

      Hey everyone.

We all love the leather seats in the 164. Volvo made such a beautiful seat. I do not know what to tell you since you have a budget, but many years ago I learned how to reupholster furniture and it has been a wonderful thing. I reupholstered the seats in my 164 and I used leather on all surfaces, not just the seating surfaces. Here is a picture for all of you. Great to know about that leather repair kit. My seats were hard as rocks too

Darn. I was hoping you had a source in Iowa or someplace. I have never been taught how to darn leather so I will need to find someone to do it for me in the Twin Cities area. The driver's seat needs new foam, heated seat element, and possible springs/wire net. The pass seat has dried out so much that the stitching seams have separated in the center of the seatback, so it too needs to be replaced. The rear seat is still in one piece, but in very ugly condition.
I was hoping to drive to a shop today and have them give me an estimate. I will let you know how much that will hurt. I wonder if preforated vinyl would be cheaper and still allow for a heated seat? Sure does get cold up here for 5 months in a row.

If you don't want to retrofit 240 seats to keep it more original then have them recovered by a good auto upholsterer. Or did the 75 164 basically have the 240 seats? I know 73's and 74's were different.

I just had the front seat bottoms done locally on my 244 and it cost me $150 albeit in vinyl. But it looks good. Leather would have been $300. OK I'm cheap. That included new IPD seat grid install that I provided. I delivered the seats and picked them up two days later.

Keep looking for a better deal than $1,700 !

      Yes, they were 240 seats in '75 140-160 1975

'75 164 seats were essentially 240 seats (including the triangular 20 headrests) except for a fancier upholtery -- two-tone leather. In fact, a lot of 240 is visible in the '75 164.

Consider replacing the front seats with leather ones from a 240. I did this on my 75 164. It was a straight bolt in. You should be able to get the drivers seat with a heater that will plug into the connection on the 164. The 240 seats are alot more comfortable that those that came in the 164. At least that's my take on this issue.

      Jerry,
I found a local pic&pull which has a 90-91 240 sedan. You think those seats would fit my 1975 164? If it ever stops snowing around here (twin cities), I may have a look. They are gray cloth with black backs. Mine is currently all black, so they should look OK.

      Thanks,
      Klaus
